"Speechless?" I hissed. "Usually, you always have some flattering words ready. Manipulations. Where are they now?"

He hastily lowered his eyes, yet for a tiny moment, I had caught the sadness that my words had triggered in him.

He was a good actor, wasn't he? I realized I was once again wavering when it came to this man. My steadfastness crumbled before my eyes, and the anger in my veins cooled. No matter how hard I tried, I could never see through Lucifer, the devil. Or was he Tanael, the angel with the white and gold feathers? Did I even want that? And if so, why?

Confused by my feelings, I lowered my hand with the ring, sighed, and closed my eyelids.

Two warm hands gently took hold of mine. I felt the ring being slipped back onto my finger.

"I'm sorry," Tanael whispered, not releasing his touch. "I'm sorry."

"What exactly are you sorry for?" I asked more sharply than I intended. I slowly raised my eyes, and as soon as my green melted into his gold, I knew it had been a mistake.

His thumbs stroked the backs of my hands tenderly.

"That I didn't tell you what purpose the ring serves. That I put you in great danger with it. That I called your fiancé a stupid person. But most of all, that I made you angry again." He tilted his head thoughtfully. "Your face was shining thanks to your beautiful laugh. A laugh I destroyed."

"Oh," was all I said. I could beat myself up for that one word, but I melted away like wax in the sun.

"So you won't have any more questions, here is more information. The amulet only makes you invisible to immortal beings in the human world. The ring, however, covers your humanity and is, therefore, particularly effective in the underworld. It makes you appear like an immortal. The ring and amulet together protect you best in both worlds. Please never, ever take it off." His eyes held an intense plea, and I nodded trepidatiously.

"Can you forgive me?" he asked, moving closer. His gaze lingered on my lips, and my whole body was crying out to be touched by them—and not just on my mouth—no, everywhere. There was a fire burning between my thighs that only his tongue could put out.

A shiver crawled over my entire body, urging me to be even closer to Tanael, to snuggle up to him and drown in our passion together.

I could already taste his breath on my tongue, and it would only take a slight movement of my head to finally be able to kiss him.

It's just like on the beach! On the beach! Before he treated me like dirt and coldly dismissed me.

Horrified at how easily I had fallen into his trap again, I stepped back and snatched my hands from him.

"Good, then that's settled," I stammered, still dazed by his scent.

"Ehm. Yes. ... Myrina?" He stared at me with wide eyes. No, he literally devoured me with his gaze, which slid very slowly down my body.

Desire flared up in the gold of his irises like a fire that wanted to entice me to approach him again.

But at the last moment, I remembered why he was looking at me like that in the first place. I was still half naked, and the dried mud had rubbed off in most areas during the ride.

I hastily wrapped my arms around my upper body to cover my breasts.

"Turn around, please!" I shouted at him. I wasn't a prude, but I knew this would end dramatically if I continued giving him this view.

A cheeky grin stole onto Tanael's face, and his look became dangerous. Dangerous and forbidden.

"Nothing you should be ashamed of. Quite the opposite!" he purred. Back was the Lucifer part of him, the devil.

"If you don't want to be chased across the garden by a unicorn, turn around right now!" I growled indignantly and pointed my chin toward the magical animal, which had already pricked up its ears. I wasn't sure whether it would go after the god if I asked, but my counterpart didn't know that.

He now looked over at my white rescuer a little skeptically.

The gold of his eyes slid over my silhouette one last time, a line that burned itself into my body like a fire following its course. I steadfastly ignored the tugging in my lower abdomen and kept up my grim expression on the outside. But inside, I was literally melting in my own longing, in my desire.

He turned his back to me very slowly and not without that cheeky grin.

"That better?" he asked, amused.

No, not at all, because now I was unabashedly inspecting his bottom and muscular back—the latter, unfortunately, without his wings, which he carefully kept hidden from me.
