I squeezed my eyes shut energetically. "Yes, much better," I lied, hoping he wouldn't notice my trembling voice. "I need a bath," I awkwardly tried to cover my emotional state with a new topic.

"A bath?" The words were like liquid chocolate, and his delivery was a testament to the images that accompanied them in his head.

"Alone!" I added quickly.

"Too bad." Tanael giggled, and once again, there was a tug deep down in my stomach that made me gasp. Startled by this sound, I held my breath.

"If you're really sure about that, I'd suggest the bathroom in my bedroom. No one will bother you there."

"No," I answered firmly. Now that I knew it was his bed and his bath I had been lying in, it would feel like he was there. As if he was lying naked in the water with me. That idea alone made me tremble.

"We talked about the bedroom this morning. You know my opinion on that. Doesn't Aza have a bathroom?"

A sigh escaped him. "Have you seen a bathtub or shower anywhere in Aza's room?"

"No," I admitted meekly. Just a wash bowl, which wouldn't help with the amount of dirt I was covered in.

"You're welcome to use my bath," I suddenly heard Zuri's voice. Surprised, I looked around for her. She was standing right next to the unicorn, which was letting her cuddle it. She had a friendly and open smile on her lips. She was beautiful, and once again, she painfully reminded me that even if I let him into my life, Tanael would never be mine.

Sleek as a cat, she approached me in an elegant black dress. Her red hair shone like a setting sun.

"Myrina. I've already heard from Hecate that you made it. Let me help you get rid of the mud."

She hooked herself up to me and gently pulled me towards the house as if it were the most natural thing in the world, like two friends with a lot to talk about.

"Tanael, take care of the unicorn!" she called over her shoulder to the silent god. Only a disappointed hum indicated he was still present.

I could clearly feel his gaze on my naked back. His desire and his longing were like invisible claws that wanted to drive me back into his arms. But Zuri forced me to move on.

I knew it was better this way, but it felt like a piece of my heart was lost every time we were apart.

CHAPTER 14

Undeterred, Zuri led me into the villa, where she walked with me up the grand staircase to the second floor. We passed the door to Tanael's bedroom, and I could smell the scent of his sheets and, therefore, him.

My body stiffened at the thought.

"Don't worry, Myrina. I won't take you to his room," Zuri said gently. Apparently, she thought my tension was caused by my fear of entering the master's bedroom.

She looked at me thoughtfully from the side.

"I thought it was very strong of you how you defended your wish at the breakfast table this morning. You've already experienced so many bad things, and yet no one has been able to destroy your inner fire."

I looked at her in amazement. Her dark eyes rested gently on me. There was no resentment, mockery, or even jealousy in them. Instead, I could detect a sincere admiration.

"Zuri, can I ask you something?" The words came out before I could stop them, and now I regretted saying them.

"Of course. Ask me anything on your mind," the angel encouraged me. I wonder if she had wings, and if so, what color they would be.

"Have you known Tanael for a long time?" I dared to ask.

"Long?" She giggled. "What does long mean in the life of an angel or god?"

She suddenly became serious. "I've known Lucifer, Tanael, for as long as I can remember. He saved me once, you must know."

"Saved? From what?"

"From myself." Sadness enveloped this delicate woman's otherwise cheerful figure. She stopped and looked sadly at the ground.
