Tanael looked down briefly before turning his gaze back to me. "I'll do my best."

I knew I had to accept this, even if it wasn't exactly what I had hoped to hear.

I looked around and realized that everyone else was standing there frozen.

"What's wrong with them?" I looked at the angel in amazement, and he gave me a wry grin.

"I wanted to be alone with you for a moment," he purred before releasing his hands from mine, gracefully stepping back and suddenly leaving me in an unbearable cold.

Everyone in the room moved again immediately.

"Luze, don't you dare use a spell like that on me again!" Hecate immediately snarled, looking life-threatening. The two boys, on the other hand, were so flabbergasted I felt sorry for them.

"Where were we?" Tanael elegantly ignored Hecate's shouting fit.

"Um..." Edward stuttered. "The Brotherhood kidnaps women to find Lilith's true daughter."

"Yes, that's right. Thank you, Edward," Tanael warbled in a way he wasn't used to. What had gotten into him? Was he trying to cover up some insecurity? Somehow, I couldn't shake off the feeling that it had something to do with the promise I had wrested from him.

"What are we going to do now? Search for the Holy Grail, i.e., the woman? Visit the three holy sites to find the lost documents? Maybe we'll find both in the same place," Chris pondered.

"I suggest we call it a night and go to bed. Tomorrow we will have a meeting with the Amazons. We should share our findings with them," the angel suggested, putting the book and parchment scrolls back on the bookshelf. Then, strategically, he moved out of my way.

"Good idea. I'm sure Aspasia and Maggy would like to go on the search," I agreed. "Where did you say the meeting was taking place?"

"In the magical world," Tanael answered the question without looking at me.

"The what?" Edward groaned in horror.

"The magical world, boy," Hecate giggled and threw her cruel smile at Edward. He immediately took a few steps back.

"Could you explain that?" Chris wanted to hear from her, and his firm voice surprised me. He had positioned himself between her and Edward, staring at her challengingly.

"Yes..." Hecate stammered in surprise and tilted her head as she gazed at my brother as if she were seeing him for the first time—seeing him properly.

"The magical world is divided into realms, like the human world and the underworld. The creatures you know from fairy tales, myths, and legends live there," she clarified calmly.

"Thank you, Hecate." My brother smiled at her and then turned to Edward. "Are you all right?"

"Are you really going to sleep in Aza's room tonight?" I suddenly heard a dark voice ask behind me. Tanael stood a little way away from the group next to the bookshelves and looked at me challengingly. I slowly walked towards him.

"I would actually prefer to spend some time with my family. There's a lot to talk about from the last few years, so if it's possible, I'd like to move in with them at the beach house."

"That's not a problem. The mansion in the Hamptons is magically protected. No one will be able to find you there or harm you," Tanael replied, and I wasn't sure how to classify the slight tremor in his voice.

Distance. We both needed distance.

"But I'll ask Aza if she wants to come with me. She loved the house as much as I did back then," I told him.

"You love my house?" A smile stole across his face, and he looked happy.

Unintentionally, I took another step closer and couldn't take my eyes off his lips.

"It's nice, your smile. You should be happy more often." My eyes traveled to his golden irises, which always held some sadness in every emotion. "You deserve it."

CHAPTER 21

Aza was delighted when I asked her if she would accompany me to the Hamptons. She immediately agreed and, a few minutes later, was ready with a small travel bag.
