It was full of desire, and at the same time, there was a pain in it I couldn't place.

Before I could think about it any further, his lips met mine with such passion I was almost overcome by a wave. Gently and urgently, his tongue begged for entrance, which I granted him. The sweetness of his breath touched my senses; it was like a fruit I had devoured in the past but was no longer allowed to eat. A forbidden fruit.

At the same moment, a radiant light penetrated my darkness. Light and dark merged, creating a balance I needed and was missing. For the first time, I was complete and at peace with myself.

The kiss became increasingly stormy and passionate, and it seemed to want to take everything with it. Reason, reality, and danger faded into the background. Only our feelings remained, rooted in us for ages and stronger than any reason.

I heard a muffled clearing of the throat. "You two can't be left alone for a second." Sam's voice sounded amused and worried at the same time.

The lips parted from me. The hand stroked my cheek one last time, and then it was gone. My darkness pulled me back into its comforting embrace, which cradled me.

"It's getting harder every day, Sam. We need to finish this as soon as possible." The pain in his voice was the same pain I felt in my heart.

"I know," Sam sighed. "Just keep trying to stay away from her, Luze. There's too much at stake."

"As if I didn't know that, Sam!" growled the God of the First Light.

Then, my darkness completely tore me away from the waking world, and silence enveloped me.

"Myrina!" Aspasia's voice and a vigorous shaking of my body woke me up.

I opened my eyes sleepily. My friend looked tired. Worry had left its furrows on the Amazon's face. Nevertheless, she smiled at me.

"Hey, you sleepyhead. Everyone else has been up for a long time. Where are you? You still have to get changed, and we're about to leave."

"What time is it?" I yawned.

"Quarter to two in the morning," my girlfriend laughed, pulling me out of the armchair. Three blankets fell to the floor, which she quickly gathered up and threw back onto the now empty piece of furniture. She pulled me on relentlessly.

Where did the two extra blankets come from? Confused, I looked around. Everything else was exactly the same as when I had fallen asleep.

The dream, this disturbing, beautiful dream, came back to me. I had kissed Tanael. It had felt so frighteningly good and real. I dreamily stroked my lips with one finger. They were slightly swollen. Strange.

"Come on now," Aspasia urged, pushing me out of the study. "Your clothes are in my room. We still have to make a man out of you." She winked at me with a grin. She looked relaxed, almost as if a great weight had fallen from her shoulders. The burden of a secret.

"How are you now?" I asked and stopped. "It was so courageous of you to tell us everything. Thank you for your trust."

She looked at me in amazement. "Thank you for your understanding, Myrina." She turned to me and took my hands in hers. "It was tough for me to tell you. Not because I don't like you or because I don't want to share my secret with you and Maggy. People have often helped me in the past when I needed a place to hide. But unfortunately, it became increasingly difficult to find someone who had no contact with the Brotherhood. The Brotherhood, on the other hand, became bigger and more influential over the millennia. At some point, a so-called friend betrayed me, and I decided it would be better to keep it to myself. I narrowly escaped the Knights of John back then."

The betrayal had deeply affected her, and the sadness was still clearly visible in her features today. I didn't know what to say, so I hugged her.

"We'll stop them so they leave you alone from now on," I promised her, and I felt her subsequent nod against my cheek. I hugged her one last time and thoughtfully inspected her up and down.

"Are you sure you're wearing the right clothes?" I asked with a laugh. "You don't look like a man despite those boots, trousers, and shirt."

"Wait until I put my hat on; then, you won't recognize me," she predicted with a grin. We continued walking, giggling. Edward stepped out of his room just before we arrived at her door. He nervously plucked at the same clothes Aspasia was wearing.

"Hello, you two. Do you know where I can get a snack before we leave?" he asked. "When I'm excited, I always need something to eat."

"Go down the stairs and follow the corridor below until you reach a simple wooden door. There is the kitchen," I explained.

"Thank you, Myrina." With quick steps, he disappeared in the direction indicated.

"Uff, I could do with something to eat as well. Is it all right if I go with Edward?" my friend asked.

"As we don't know how long we'll have to crawl around in the tunnels, that's a good idea. You go ahead and reserve me a sandwich or even a pancake. I'm afraid with all the men here, nothing will be left for me. I'll change quickly and then join you," I promised.

While Aspasia hurried behind Edward, I entered her room. It was decorated in yellow. Sunflower patterns lined the walls at eye level, and the bedspread was also covered in images of these flowers. In the adjoining bathroom, a bathtub stood on tiny golden feet, and a small waterfall ended in a basin. After quickly freshening up, I stripped off my clothes and walked back into the bedroom in just my briefs.
