"You were with Hades?" He hugged me even tighter, and I wrapped my arms around his upper body as if by reflex.

"He let you go. Then I won't be able to avoid dinner," he growled. "The God of the Underworld doesn't normally let anyone go. It's against the universe's rules, which are sacred to him."

"He left the decision up to me," I explained, and a little longing for the infinite peace I had felt in the world of the dead tugged at me.

"How did he free you from the Kers' poison?" the angel wanted to know.

"You know about this?" I asked, embarrassed, as I immediately remembered the reason for this attack on me. My darkness.

"Yes, Sam spotted him, and then we ran into the tunnels, partly to reduce the distance between you and his power and partly because he had seen us," Tanael told me the story I had missed. "Fortunately, these creatures are purely instinct-driven, so he didn't inform anyone of our presence. The Ker was hot on our heels, but at one point he just stopped, turned around, and ran back to the digging women. That was probably the moment you were healed."

"The unicorn, Flor, has healed me."

"A unicorn." He grinned. "You never cease to amaze me."

"Why didn't the amulet protect me?" I wanted to know.

"Unfortunately, the Ker is one of those beings with an extreme power. The amulet cannot protect you from it. Even the immortals are not safe from them. When it comes to a fight, we also have to put a shield around our darkness. It sucks its victims dry until they die. Whether god, angel, demon, magical being or human."

"Myrina is fine," he said out loud, and only then did I realize we weren't alone. I hastily peeled myself out of his grasp and looked into four worried faces. Sam looked at me in amazement.

"It was probably just a panic attack," Tanael lied.

"Only Sam knows about the Ker. The others think a Knight of John was chasing us," I heard his explanation for the lie echoing in my head. "So, you can decide who you want to tell."

"Thank you," I whispered back.

"It's nothing to be ashamed of."

I looked at him in surprise. He knew about my insecurity?

"Everyone has darkness within them, some more than others. But that doesn't make us a bad person. Darkness does not equal evil. It is a counterpart that we need, that everyone has within them. You can use it for good as well as for bad. The decision we make determines whether we are good or bad."

I would have loved to hug him again at that moment. His words felt so good because they reflected my innermost feelings. It was my decision. It was up to me who I wanted to be with, my light and dark sides.

CHAPTER 30

Can you walk, Myrina?" asked Aspasia, approaching me. Tanael was still holding me in his arms.

"Yes, I think so," I mumbled, and the God of the First Light set me down carefully. My knees were trembling, and my body felt weak. The angel supported me because I couldn't stand upright without his support.

"Don't worry, I'll hold you. It will take a few minutes for your body to fully recover." His voice gently stroked my thoughts. "Just lean against me."

"You gave us a huge scare. Fortunately, you seem to be all right again," Aspasia continued as I leaned timidly against the warm body at my back.

"Everything is fine. Don't worry," I replied and smiled reassuringly.

"Then let's move on quickly," urged Stephan. "We've already let a lot of time pass and still haven't found anything."

Sam looked thoughtfully from me to Tanael. "Stephan is right. We have to keep going."

"No problem." My voice sounded less strong than I had hoped, so I demonstratively took a few steps into the tunnel.

That convinced the rest of the group I was doing better because they followed the same path. Sam and Stephan ran ahead, followed by Aspasia and Edward, who revealed all his knowledge about the Holy Grail to the Amazon.

Even the short walk had consumed an enormous amount of energy. How was I supposed to keep up with the group? Tanael immediately stood next to me again and held me before my legs gave way.

"I can't do it," I admitted without the others hearing. "You'd better leave me here."
