We were getting ready for this year’s Monsters & Magic Charity Gala together, and this time, I was going as myself. Shane didn’t understand why I wanted to get ready at my sister’s, when I could get dressed and put on my makeup just as easily at our place. I explained it was a girl thing. It was just more fun to prep and primp with someone else.

This year, Iris was dressed all in gold. I went with a more understated champagne gown with clear crystal accents. Despite the difference in style, our dresses complemented each other’s. We’d done that on purpose to highlight our similarities and differences. Shelby had had a lot of fun with that.

Unlike last year, I was excited to go this time. I was Shane's plus one, and Iris had gotten her own invitation.

“I don’t think I’ll be able to wear a sleek gown like this much longer,” I said, my hand on my belly. I was eighteen weeks along.

“Ech, you still pull it off no problem. You two timed it perfectly.”

“Except you’re going to have to drink double for me tonight.”

Iris laughed. “Be happy to. I can’t believe I’m going to be an aunt! Are you two going to find out if it’s a boy or girl? Or do you want it to be a surprise?”

“A surprise. The fauns and nymphs in the forest have all cast their votes. They’re so excited. Apparently, they don’t get new inhabitants that often, so every new life is a reason to celebrate. They’ve even helped us put together a nursery.”

“That’s super sweet.” Iris tore open a makeup spell, and the glittering magic rose to swirl around her face. The colors would have been a little bright for me, but they suited her perfectly. “I guess Shane isn’t fighting every guy in the woods for just looking at you anymore?”

I chuckled. “No. Most of them know by now not to waste their time. But those two naiads still try to lure me away whenever they think Shane’s not looking.”

“Naiads?”

“Water nymphs.”

“Oh! Like mermaids?”

“Kinda. But not from the ocean.”

A light through the window had Iris peeking outside. “Ooh, he’s here.”

The limo had picked up Shane first to give us a little more time to get ready. Shane walked in, looking as hot as ever. He did clean up well. I honestly couldn’t tell what I liked more: Shane au naturel or Shane all dressed up.

Same as every time I saw him, my body thrummed just to look at him.

Then his eyes landed on me, and his jaw hit the floor.

I gave him a twirl to show him all the angles.“You like it?” I asked, even though I could tell he did just from the look on his face.

“Like it? I love it.” He pulled me into his arms, his fingers tracing down the laced corset back. “Especially this part here. I can’t wait to take it off you.”

“TMI!” Iris shrieked.

I just giggled. “Come on,” I said. “Let’s go dance the night away.”

“I hope you had a stronger spell cast on those shoes this year,” Shane teased.

“Oh, trust me. I did!”

THE END
