FORTY-THREE

FAITH

I fumed.

How dare Sebastian just pass the buck? Delaying this conversation by saying that I needed to focus on my work.

The audacity.

He couldn’t be bothered to just have a fucking conversation about it. About what happens next. He was a grown man afraid to have a conversation.

I didn’t need a ring. But would I like to know if we planned to come back upstate after the gallery showing? Sure. Just something. Anything.

At least Willow was on my side. The pup had followed after me, leaving Sebastian alone in the kitchen to stew in his misery.

She comforted me as I shed tears into my pillow and now the poor girl sat on my bed, head between her paws as she watched me pace.

I slid my phone out of my back pocket. In a few taps, I had Daisy’s contact information on my screen. My finger hovered over the call button until I remembered the time.

If I called the cavalry at one in the morning, my brother would freak out.

The last thing I needed to deal with was another billionaire who thought he knew best.

No. I would let them sleep and call Daisy in the morning.

Then I remembered there was someone who would be up in the middle of the night.

“Go for Luna.”

I laid next to Willow on the bed. “Thank goodness you answered.”

“Faith? One second. It’s loud as fuck tonight. The weather is halfway decent, so half of New York decided to go out and party.”

I pulled the phone away from my ear as I overheard loud techno music pumping through the line. Luna chatted with people as I waited for her to find a quiet space. Then, finally, a door closed. “Faith, you still there?”

The other end of the line was blissfully quiet with the exception of Luna’s voice. “Yes. Still here.”

“Oof, sorry about that. What a night. To what do I owe the pleasure? You coming out? You need a private booth? I can set it up. Let me get my guys on it.”

“No, no, no. Nothing like that.”

“Huh. Usually people who call past midnight are looking for a hookup at my club. Let me sit down.”

“I’m not calling for that kind of favor.”

“Color me intrigued.”

Why was I suddenly nervous to ask for her help? It seemed like a no-brainer sixty seconds ago. I buried my face in Willow’s coat, looking for support. “I know this is an unusual ask, since we don’t know each other too well yet…”

Luna interrupted me. “Absolutely.”

“I haven’t asked you yet.”

“Whatever you need. You got it.”

“What if I said I needed a plane?”

“Then I’d say, I can’t buy you a plane, I’m not your sugar mama, but I can rent one and have it for you within a few hours,” she said frankly. “Wait. Where are you?”
