Dominic crossed his arms over his chest. “I’d like to hear this too.”

Daisy poked him in the ribs, and the frown on his face softened.

“Remember that one dinner we had for your birthday? It was two or three years ago when you were in town.” Dominic made the occasional trip back from London for major events. My parents always insisted we do something as a family for our birthdays. It was practically a given in the Waters household.

Dom’s brows furrowed and so did Sebastian’s.

“This I want to hear,” Daisy jumped in.

“We got dinner catered, sushi, I think, and you invited some friends over. These two avoided each other the entire night.”

I remembered that night vividly. Sebastian looked like a million dollars in a custom-made Tom Ford suit in slate gray. The man rocked a suit. Never in my life had I been so intimidated by a good-looking guy in a power suit and yet I found myself unable to even meet his gaze.

In the here and now, Sebastian scratched the back of his neck, his chin tucked to his chest.

I hip checked him. “Was that true? Were you trying to avoid me that night?”

Sebastian looked sheepish, probably because we were standing around in a circle with my family leaning forward with bated breath to hear if he was indeed hiding from me from that night.

I sank my teeth into my bottom lip. “I’ll tell you my side of it.” Then I glanced at the group of busybodies. “Now scram and let me talk to Sebastian.”

Daisy and Aunt Maggie audibly sighed.

Dominic stayed put as Dad and Maggie ventured a few feet away to actually take a look at my art.

Daisy tugged on my brother’s arm. “Stop being a grumpy jerk and let them talk.”

“I think I should supervise.”

I glared at my brother. “Dominic Hudson Waters, leave us now.” Each word came out in staccato.

Dominic lifted two fingers and pointed them at his own eyes and then at Sebastian. The universal sign for I’m watching you and you better not hurt my younger sister otherwise I’ll beat your ass.

I basically pushed my brother away. “Yes, yes. You’re a big scary billionaire. We get it.”

Daisy just chuckled and threaded her arms through Dominic’s, gently guiding him away.

Sebastian and I stood in front of each other. Our hands connected. My head tilted back, craning to get a good look at him even though my heels did a decent job of reducing our height difference.

It felt like just he and I, back in our own little bubble.

Flash.

And then the bubble burst.

“Oh, shit,” the person with their phone said. Sebastian dropped my hands, turning toward our interrupter.

The young woman lifted her hands. “Didn’t realize the flash was on.”

Charlie arrived, escorting the woman away. I was sure people snuck photos throughout the evening. Some even asked nicely. But that flash definitely broke whatever semblance of privacy I thought I felt.

Sebastian’s hand ran across his scruff like sandpaper. He undid the button on his suit.

“Time to go,” I said.

“Thank God,” Sebastian muttered. It was then I realized he wasn’t going to drag me out of here until I wanted to go. I just gave him the permission he wanted.

Dominic suddenly returned with Daisy. “I’ll call the car and have them meet us in the back.”
