But my eyes kept straying over to Sebastian, desperate to know what he thought about this whole situation. Obviously his offer to house me was just to appease my brother. It was certainly one of those throwaway comments people make but don’t actually mean. Kind of like when you ask someone who is sick if you can get them anything. You say it to be kind but don’t actually expect them to take you up on it.

My brother clasped his hands together after setting his empty plate on the coffee table. “We should get back to the topic at hand.”

I savored the final bite of my pie. “Again, we don’t need this to be a group discussion.”

“I agree,” Sebastian said, startling me.

Dominic and Daisy’s heads whipped toward him.

“I want to talk to Faith. Privately.”

SEBASTIAN

“I want to talk to Faith. Privately.”

The words slipped from my lips. The path was suddenly so clear to me. Dominic and Daisy were well intentioned but weren’t making progress with Faith.

I’d convince her to let me help her.

From the second Dominic got the SOS text from Daisy, my body had been on high alert, adrenaline flowing through me trying to fight off some invisible enemy.

Dominic attempted to go on his own, but I insisted I come with him in case there was anything I could do to help.

I’d apply my security skills wherever I could. I wasn’t a bodyguard, nothing like that, but I could offer my own protection. And after seeing that black eye forming on her flawless skin, I was ready to launch a full assault to keep her safe.

I meant it when I said she could stay with me. We might not know each other well, but something drew me to her. Some invisible thread that I’d always felt in her presence.

Dominic must have known what the offer cost me. It was a rare thing to be invited to my oasis in the woods. Nobody beyond a few close friends were ever invited there. And my mom, of course. She’d always be welcome in my space.

Dominic and Daisy shared a look, and something must have passed between them before they nodded. The pair of them stood and Faith frowned. “Wait, you’re leaving?”

Daisy hugged Faith who now had a look of panic on her face.

Dominic swooped in next for a hug. “Take care, kiddo. I’ll call you later.”

“But. What? Huh?” Faith stuttered. I couldn’t peel my eyes away from her as I waved at my friend and his woman who quickly left the apartment.

Faith’s long blonde hair fell in waves around her heart-shaped face. The makeup she undoubtedly applied early in the morning still sat perfectly on her face, subtly enhancing her natural beauty. Her eyes were a shocking emerald green that could hold me in a trance.

I felt the lure of her, like a siren calling to wayward sailors. Although I knew that lure wasn’t unique to me. Faith had an air about her, a magnetism so innate that it pulled everyone into her orbit. It was the exact quality that compelled and repelled me at the same time.

Her light was so bright that it deserved to be cherished. And I knew she was too good for me.

I had always known that since our first meeting.

So I stayed away, keeping her at an arm’s length.

And yet still, I wanted to help her.

When the door clicked shut behind Dominic and Daisy, I shifted forward in my chair. I didn’t dare get closer. I could already smell the light scent of her perfume. The same scent that seemed imprinted in my nose whenever I saw her.

Faith shifted in her chair. “I saw you and Dominic conspiring over there earlier.”

I nodded. “He’s worried about you.”

A laugh burst from her chest. “He’s always worried about me.”
