He and his mom shared a look. “We didn’t have a lot of time for pets,” he said finally. “Let’s start eating. We don’t want the food to get cold.”

I wanted to ask about a dozen follow-up questions, but the set of his jaw indicated he didn't want to talk about it.

We plated our food, and I took an extra-large scoop of the potatoes.

I lifted a spoonful into my mouth and groaned. “This is incredible.”

Constance beamed and even Sebastian let loose a small smirk.

“Seriously, I don’t remember the last time I had good homemade food that I didn’t have to make myself.”

Constance eyed me over her wine glass. “Do you cook, sweetheart?”

“Occasionally. I’ve been cooking a lot for my dad lately. Although I’m pretty sure he hates all the vegetables I’m trying to sneak into his diet. It’s like having a toddler.”

“Ah, a picky eater. I had one of those,” she said, reaching over to cup Sebastian’s cheek.

“Mom-”

“Fine, don’t embarrass you in front of your pretty friend. Got it.” She winked.

I laughed. “Ignore him, I want you to tell me everything.”

“And that’s your cue to go,” Sebastian said, pushing back his chair.

Constance had already finished most of the food from her plate. “I’ll leave if I can take the wine.”

“Fine. It’s yours. I bought it for you anyway.”

“Damn right it is,” she said, pushing away from the table. “Well, I’m being dismissed. It was lovely to meet you, sweetheart. Feel free to stop by the cottage to say hi.”

She shoved the cork back in the top of the wine bottle and gave a little finger wave.

Willow lifted her head from her spot on the wood floor, wagging her tail as Constance blew her a kiss.

“I can’t believe you kicked your mom out of your house,” I teased. “She’s great.”

He shrugged. “She’s the best.”

“Seriously, you are lucky to have her.”

“Trust me, I know.”

Faith didn’t know the half of it.

“How long has she lived here?”

I finished chewing a piece of chicken. “I bought the property knowing I wanted her to have her own space. This one was perfect with a main house and a secluded cottage. It had everything she had talked about wanting over the years.”

Faith tilted her head and set down her fork. “What do you mean?”

I polished off my glass of wine and headed to the wine rack to grab another one. This conversation required wine and my mom took the bottle.

After a few turns, the cork came out with a satisfying pop. I refilled both of our glasses. “You want to head to the library? I can get the fire going; it’s starting to get chilly in here.”
