I nodded. “That’s it. Hence the schmoozing.”

“When do we go meet him?” she asked over the top of her glass.

I put a finger to my temple. “That’s the thing, he hasn’t told me yet.”

Faith clicked her tongue, her hands cupping the wine glass like it was a cup of hot chocolate. “So he’s playing games with you?”

“Something like that.”

The fire crackled, drawing our attention.

“Let me know when you have a date.”

“I will.” And hopefully it was sooner rather than later. I hated to wait. Hated to play games.

Another facet to this arrangement was giving her a break from the press while having her catch up on her painting. That blank canvas in the atrium indicated that the inspiration I hoped she’d find hadn’t shown up yet.

“You should come running with me tomorrow.”

Faith frowned. “Running where? Errands?”

I couldn’t help but let loose a chuckle. “No, running. With your legs.”

She pointed at me. “You laughed.”

“You make it sound like an accusation.”

She hefted a shoulder. “It basically is. You rarely laugh, especially not with me.”

“It happens. About my idea…”

Faith finished her glass, and I immediately went to pour her more.

“You need inspiration and there’s nothing better than clearing your mind with a good run. There are a bunch of trails here. I go out most mornings. You should join me and Willow. It might help.”

Faith reached out to pet Willow. “I’m not really into running. Walking, sure. I can walk the streets of Manhattan all day every day—in heels. But running has never been my thing.”

“Isn’t that why you’re here? Your thing isn’t working?”

She blanched.

Fuck, I hit a nerve.

Faith stood and Willow’s head perked up, as if wondering where her new best friend was off to. “I’m going to bed. Thank you for the wine and the dinner.”

“Faith-”

“Good night,” she said firmly, taking her glass with her.

“Night.”

TEN

FAITH

“Can we take a break?” I bent over and tried to catch my breath. The crisp air filled my lungs, which seemed like a good thing considering it felt like they were on fire.

Sebastian hadn’t even broken a sweat but stopped to wait for me while I panted. Willow decided to give me reassuring kisses, which I accepted gladly.
