“I’m serious.”

She clicked her tongue and pushed her hair back. “I know, sweetie.”

Sebastian was avoiding me.

Which was particularly annoying because I hadn't painted anything since he told me about the upcoming trip to the city a few days ago. I'd been aimless ever since.

Constance invited me over for the occasional treat, an invite I always accepted. We giggled over every DM she got now that her dating profile was set up, with help from yours truly, dissecting the pros and cons of every potential suitor.

But for the most part I sat in the atrium doodling, or listening to music, or thinking about my dad. I'd called him several times, and he kept assuring me he was doing well. His skin color looked healthy, and he even smiled occasionally when we spoke on FaceTime.

He was thriving, and I was…not. I was happy for him, of course, but couldn't kick the lost feeling that consumed me, especially late at night.

Willow kept me company. Thank goodness for that dog. I had half a mind to steal her when I went back to the city. I would too, if the city were a good place for a big, energetic black Lab. Which, of course, it wasn't.

Perhaps I could get a smaller furry friend to keep me company. I always pushed off thoughts of getting a pet despite having grown up with so many. It just never seemed fair to have a pet when I traveled and partied often. Now that my life had slowed down, I think I was finally ready to take that step.

It wouldn't hurt to have a little cuddle buddy to come home too either.

I went on so many trail walks that I could feel my legs getting stronger every day. My stamina increased too. Finally, the black eye had completely faded as if it had never happened at all.

And that night on the street, surrounded by paparazzi, felt like a million years ago. It had been less than two weeks.

I laid in bed, feeling lonely so I decided to text Daisy.

Faith

I'm heading into the city with Sebastian on Friday. We should meet up.

Daisy

Absolutely. Do you want to teach your class while you're here or keep a low profile?

I knew she had someone come and substitute for me last week and I felt horrible not following through with my commitment. Those kids loved my class, and I loved teaching them. It filled me with a sense of purpose and belonging that I'd been searching for. Besides, those kids weren't impressed by me and my last name; they were impressed that I was a grown up that showed up.

Faith

Screw low profile. I'll be there.

My phone buzzed in my hand.

Dominic.

Why was my brother calling?

"Hello, Bro."

"Why is Daisy spending our dinner texting my sister?" he grumbled.

An unexpected laugh burst from my chest. "Because she likes me better than you."

"I'm sure that's true some days."

"It's brave of you to admit that," I said, curling up in my bed. "Where did you take her for dinner?"
