I pushed to start. “Let’s go home.”

* * *

I dialed Beck Bennett the minute Faith strode off toward the atrium to paint.

“Go for Bennett.”

“I want you to send over two of your strongest people,” I said without prelude.

“Hello to you too, Sebastian. Nice to hear from you. As talkative as ever.”

I didn’t have time for his normal bullshit. “I’m serious. I need you to send over your best people. Today.”

His voice grew low. “Is it serious?”

I dragged a hand through my hair and paced the room. “Yes.”

“Are you in any immediate danger?”

I thought about it for a second. My body’s reaction sure as hell made it feel like danger was imminent, but the rational part of my brain finally kicked back in. “No. No immediate danger.”

I heard a chair squeak on the other end of the line. “Why don’t you slow down and start from the beginning?”

I paced as I filled him in on everything. From the moment Dominic got the text from Daisy that she and Faith were hounded by paparazzi to the moment that Gary asked for her photograph because he was very clearly not asking for mine.

And I had fucking missed it. Dropped my guard. Had figured the shelter was my safe place. It was a safe place for these animals, and I never once considered that it might not also be a safe place for Faith.

Despite being so fucking vigilant everywhere else.

I wouldn’t make the same mistake twice.

No. I called Beck Bennett to make sure it never happened again.

By the end of the call he’d promised to send over two people—one of whom would be there in a few hours—the other would show up in the morning.

I knew it was the right move.

Now I just had to tell Faith.

THIRTY

FAITH

“You won’t believe what Sebastian’s done!”

Daisy set down her mug on the other end of the screen. I had Facetimed her the minute I burst onto the back patio, heading for my favorite trail behind the house, Willow in tow. I could tell from her background that she was in her tiny office at the McKinley Public Library where she worked.

“I’m not bothering you, am I?”

“I have ten minutes until my technology one oh one class. We are going over email etiquette again. It seems some folks forgot how annoying it is when you reply all.”

I shuddered. “That is the worst. Like, stop emailing. We get it.”

Daisy leaned forward. “Tell me what’s going on? Did something finally happen between you and Sebastian Steele?”

I glanced behind me even though rationally I knew I was alone on the trail.

“Something did happen.”
