Now I felt terrible. "I have an idea. Come to my place and I'll order from the restaurant downstairs. They have amazing curry."

One thing I'd learned about Daisy, she could easily be persuaded by food. It was one of her most endearing qualities.

"Curry does sound good…"

I hugged her from the side as we headed down the street. "Of course, it does."

We walked down the stairs to the subway and got off at my stop. When we were a block away from my building, I spotted two men with cameras.

I ducked into the nearest open door, which happened to be a fancy bar I'd never been to, dragging Daisy with me.

She stumbled into me. "What are you doing?"

"I see a few paps outside my building."

Daisy's brow furrowed. "Paps?"

I rolled my eyes. "Paparazzi. They've been relentless since Dad's heart attack."

Daisy stepped forward, craning her neck out of the door to get a better look.

The hostess glared at me before registering who I was. Then her frown turned upside down, and she beamed. This hideout wouldn't be safe for long. Many places would quickly sell me out to get a photo of me in front of their business.

"I just wanted some damn curry," I pouted.

"Is there a back way in?" Daisy asked.

I caught the hostess texting furiously.

"We’ve got to go."

Daisy followed me out of the bar. "What if I just walked in front of you? Or I can distract them."

It wasn't worth it, so I pulled my shoulders back and walked straight for the double doors of my building. The doorman, Dimitri, spotted me. With a quick head nod he pointed out that there were six more paparazzi behind a waiting car.

"Ugh," I complained under my breath, my hand already digging in my purse for my sunglasses. "Just pretend they aren't there. Don't look at them. Don't say anything to them."

"Can't we just turn around and head to Dominic's?"

"It's too late." We were just a few steps away from the entrance when the shouting started. They ran up to me and got right in my face.

"Faith, how's your father? Faith, what's going on with Calm Waters after your dad's heart attack? Why are you out partying when your dad almost died?" They continued their verbal assault as they crowded me, getting closer and closer.

One of them shoved a camera in my face as he continued to ask about my dad: Who was the one to find him? How was he doing? Did I have to resuscitate him?

The questions came in rapid fire and lights flashed in my face as they tried to get the money shot. I lifted an arm to shield myself, only to be blocked by another man with greasy hair, his elbow connecting with my face before I could stop it.

“Ahh,” I cried, lifting a hand to my face.

I heard Daisy gasp as my doorman pushed through the mayhem to grab me and ushered me into the building.

The flashes kept coming, but I ignored them, grateful for the protection the lobby provided. My eye pulsed in pain and I clutched it, as if that would make it better.

We managed to duck out of sight once we got to the elevator bank.

“That was insane,” Daisy said, reaching for me. “Did they hurt you?”

“I’m fine,” I said.
