“Which part?” The question popped out of her mouth before she could stop it.

Lust swarmed in his eyes as he watched her. “Woman, the things I have thought about doing to you are better shown than said. Whenever you are ready, let me know. In the meantime, if you want a preview, I am happy to tell you all about it.”

Locking gazes with the man beside her made Reese’s pulse galloping like a thoroughbred and her panties dampening at his confession. It was hard to breathe and getting even harder to think of anything other than the things she wanted to do to him.

“Beautiful, you have to quit looking at me like that, or else I am going to have you on this countertop you like so much.”

“I think I have to go,” Reese whispered, rubbing her thighs together as she stood up.

“You didn’t give me an answer about Mav,” Cash reached over, grabbing onto her hand. He held on to her as he walked around the island to place the other hand on the back of her stool, effectively cutting off her exit.

“He did sound happy when he came home today,” Reese pondered out loud while chewing on her bottom lip. “I suppose he can help you out until he goes back to school. However, he has the work his teachers sent, so he doesn’t fall behind. That has to get done as well. After he goes back to school, we will have to see how things go.”

“I can live with that,” Cash’s smile made her heart stutter and her core clench.

“I need you to promise me something,” Reese’s tone had his smile faltering. “Don’t make promises to him you can’t keep. If you aren’t serious about him hanging around you, don’t ask him to help you. Mav isn’t a toy. You can’t pretend interest for a while and then toss him on the shelf until you’re interested again.” Reese cut off Cash’s response with a wave of her hand. “I need to know you understand. I am not asking you to be anything other than his friend. If that doesn’t work for you, I need to know that now.”

“Your ex-husband must have been one hell of a dick.”

“Was that an I understand or a no thanks?”

“Reese, Beautiful, I am not going anywhere. I have no intention of stringing you or your kid along. That better?”

Reese just nodded. “I don’t matter. Mav matters. You know if Mav is there, you might get Pappy too.”

Cash moved his hand from the back of her stool to her face. Capturing her face in his hands, he forced her to look at him, see he wasn’t lying to her. “Then it’s a good thing I like the old man too, isn’t it? And Reese, you matter. You matter a whole damn lot.”

Reese held her breath until he released her. “I need to go home.”

“Let me walk you,” he quickly demanded, not giving her another option.

“Do I get to walk this time?” She teased.

“I did like the feel of your ass under my hand.”

“I am walking this time,” Reese reinforced without any trace of humor.

“Spoilsport,” Cash laughed. “One of these days,” he left her to fill in the blank. “Come on, Beautiful, let’s get you home.” Holding open the door for her, he grabbed her hand before she could get too far ahead of him. Cash slowly strolled them across the street and up her driveway before stopping beside her front steps.

“We have an audience,” Reese whispered to him. She removed her hand from his and stepped away.

“Beautiful,” Cash stopped her bending to take her lips before she could protest. He hauled her back to him, fitting her snugly against him, letting her feel what she did to him.

The little moan that worked its way from the back of her throat had him ready to drag her back across the street. Diving his hands into her hair, he held her in place, taking exactly what he wanted.

Cash wasn’t prepared for the jolt of passion that rocketed through him when she bit his bottom lip. Nor was he ready for the feel of her tongue soothing away the sting, mirroring his actions from earlier. Her tongue tormented him before wrapping around his, sucking like she was giving him head. He had a hard time keeping himself in check when he wrenched his mouth away from hers. Reese’s head rested against his chest with her fists clenched in his shirt. With the heat coming off their bodies, he was surprised they hadn’t combusted right there on her front porch. Cash held her tighter as a shudder wracked her body.

“We can’t do this,” Reese whispered to his chest. Damn, she did it again.

“Not on your front porch, no.”

“I have to go,” Reese said, wiggling out of his embrace. Without a second look, she hurried into the house, locking the door behind her.

“One of these days,” Cash muttered. “One of these days, and god, I hope soon.”

Chapter 8

It had been a week since she had dinner with her neighbor. She was successful in avoiding him since that night. Since that kiss, that one kiss. The kiss had her reevaluating her stance and then reaffirming her need to stay on her side of the street.
