“Did you change your mind?”

Angelina held her breath and then slowly let it out. “No.”

“What’s the problem?”

“My father was in charge of training new recruits before he retired. He knows when people lie.”

“How did you two not talk about this?” Max marveled.

“We just have to make it believable,” Jake nodded. “We have to sell it. Just like in court.”

Angelina wasn’t sure who Jake was trying to convince, but it wasn’t working. “Worst case, he finds out, and we get him to play along. We can do that.”

“This is why I am a gay man,” Max waved his hand toward them. “Grab the plates. It is time to watch you two sell this.”

Jake carried his plate and hers while Angelina grabbed one for her father and Army Ken. Max picked up his, and the wine, then put it back down. Angelina quirked her head.

“I’m not sharing that,” Max told her defiantly.

“All yours,” she agreed.

Plastering a smile on her face, she walked back into the dining room to face the firing squad. She placed a plate in front of her father and one in front of his friend. She made the mistake of inhaling too close to him. Dang, the man smelled as good as he looked. Angelina backed away quickly. It had been too long since she had been laid. That was all it was. Looking at Jake and Max, she bit back a groan. It didn’t look like it was going to happen any time soon.

“Baby girl, Ben will be staying with us for a while,” Quinn said as he shoved a fork full of pasta in his mouth. “This is good. Can’t taste the Cheez Whiz.”

“It’s a miracle,” Angelina answered before Max could. “After we eat, I will get the spare room ready.”

“I can bunk in the motorhome. It’s no problem.”

“You will not stay in there for the next few months, and that is final. There are two more suites upstairs. One is Angelina’s. The other is yours.”

“Ben is going to be staying for a few months?” Angelina gulped. Jake slid his hand onto her knee and squeezed.

“The neighbor that usually farms our place had a stroke. His wife called when I was on my way home. Ben here was already driving me, so it just makes sense. He can plant.”

“How did you break your leg?”

“Repelling.”

“Repelling what?” Angelina’s heart thumped harder.

“A cliff in Montana.”

“A cliff in Montana,” she repeated.

“Slipped and bounced the rest of the way down.”

“You were lucky it wasn’t worse,” Ben spoke up.

“You were there?” Angelina switched her attention to him.

“On the ground. I just came down.”

“He got me untangled and to the emergency room. Stuck with me until I got the cast.”

“Thank you,” Angelina held back tears.

“We stick together.”
