“No shit,” Jake laughed.

Angelina smiled. He had a great laugh. His dark skin practically glowed with joy when he laughed. Jake was as handsome as his profile picture. There had to be a reason why he was still single.

The waitress appeared to take their drink orders and then promptly disappeared.

“I guess we don’t want appetizers,” he smirked.

“Guess not.”

“What have you been working on? I had no idea I would have to fend off the paparazzi when I asked you out.”

“Hardly,” Angelina rolled her eyes. “I am working on a hunting resort.”

She couldn’t stop the smile that crossed her face. He must have looked her up. Not many people in her hometown cared that she graduated at the top of her class. The small town of Uban, Utah, had six hundred ninety-eight residents. They knew she designed pretty buildings and lived on her father’s farm. Being featured in an architectural magazine had put her on the rest of the world’s radar. The exposure kept her busy with clients from everywhere.

Jake already put more effort into their date than all her other dates combined. It was hard not to feel special when he made such an effort.

“Big or small?”

“Medium. They want more of a personalized experience for their customers.”

“Interesting.”

“How is the law office doing? Staying busy?”

Jake didn’t have a chance to respond before their drinks were dumped off at the table. With quick hands, Jake caught his before the colorful umbrella concoction could hit the table. Angelina’s didn’t fare as well. She hopped off her seat and managed to keep the blue slushy liquid from soaking her dress.

“Christy,” Jake fumed. “I’m so sorry. Let’s get some napkins, and I will see about getting us a new waitress.”

“You know her? Did you date her?” Angelina asked cautiously. Why would he bring someone new to the place where a previous girlfriend worked? Everyone knew that was bad. Very, very bad.

“Date her?” Jake recoiled, making a face of a toddler who didn’t want to eat their vegetables. “God, no.”

“So it is just her sunny personality.”

Jake mopped up the spill and tossed the napkins in her glass.

“Something wrong over here?”

Angelina looked up to see the man working behind the bar standing beside their table.

“Christy decided Angelina would like her drink on her and not in her.”

“Snarky little bitch,” the bartender sighed. “She wanted to be off tonight but couldn’t find anyone to cover for her. I guess she is getting the night off after all. Probably a few more off until she can find another job.”

Angelina looked between the two men. Clearly, they knew one another, and the bartender knew about her. Jake must have been excited about their date. The knowledge made her warm inside.

“It’s fine.” Angelina felt guilty even though it wasn’t her fault. “Nothing got on my dress. The table is wiped up.”

“Max, are you sure you want to fire her tonight?” Jake raised a questioning eyebrow.

“It will be cheaper for me to send her stuck-up ass packing than to replace drinks all night long because she has her panties in a twist.”

Angelina glanced past them to see the waitress snap at another customer. It looked like Max was right. It would cost him more in comps and replacements if he kept Christy than the inconvenience it would create by firing her.

She focused her attention back on Jake and Max. They were whispering. It didn’t strike her as odd since they knew each other. What had her red flags waving was the way they were holding hands. Jake stroked his thumb over the top of Max’s hand.

“Really?”
