“Nothing says signing my death warrant more than this contract,” Angelina swallowed hard.

The second alarm went off. Angelina silenced it. She forwarded it to Jake and instructed him to fix it before it went any further. A full-body shiver of revulsion rippled over her as she clicked out of her email. Gathering her things, she switched her focus to the people coming in.

When the last alarm went off, she was ready to go. The drawing was pinned on the board, and a smaller-scale version was placed on the table in front of the seat across from her. Angelina relaxed. This was more like her. Everything was prepared and in its place.

A sharp knock rattled the door before it rolled open. Thankfully her smile was already in place. A man more handsome than she knew they could be, strolled in. His dark hair brushed his broad shoulders. The melted chocolate drop eyes focused on her. He was shorter than Ben and dark everywhere Ben was light. Wait, why was she comparing him to Ben?

“You must be Angelina,” he aimed that megawatt smile at her.

“I am,” she managed to reply without drooling. With her day going as it had been, she counted that as a win.

“I’m Cort.”

“So nice to finally meet you,” she snapped out of her stupor and stood to greet her new client.

“I have been waiting to meet you,” he took her hand and kissed the back before gently letting it go.

“Can I get you water or some coffee?”

“No need to trouble yourself. We have so much to discuss.”

“Okay. Let’s get down to business.”

Angelina gestured to the chair across the table from her. Cort walked around the table to pull her chair out before sitting beside her. Reaching for the papers, he situated himself closer to her.

Warning bells were going off in her head. She quickly dismissed them. There had been enough weirdness in her life lately. She was making more of this than it was.

Cort wanted to sit next to her while they discussed his house. No problem. Maybe he had a hearing issue. He could be near-sighted. Taking a breath, Angelina forced herself to calm down.

“Here is the rendering of what we discussed. Thirteen thousand square feet in the main structure and an additional six-car garage with plenty of room for offices above it. What do you think?”

“How about we get to know each other before discussing the house?”

Her stomach fell. What was this one’s deal? How could she get this much crazy packed into one day?

“Easy,” he aimed his smile at her again as he took her hand. “I like to get to know the people I work with. It saves time in the long run.”

“Oh,” Angelina chided herself. “I suppose that makes sense.”

“Good. I am a software engineer. I manage a large company from my home office. I have been very fortunate. I’m ready to share some of that good fortune with my family.”

“Most of my credentials I am sure you looked at online before you contacted me to design your home.”

“There were some things I could not find.”

“Such as?”

“What made you move back to Uban after graduating from college?”

“It is where my father and I have always lived. He is my only family. Since his retirement, he has traveled a lot. It worked out for both of us.”

“No other family?”

“Nope.”

“I have quite a large family.”

“I have always wondered what that would be like,” she admitted. “It has always been Dad and me. He was an only child, so no aunts or uncles. My grandparents are gone.”
