“It is wonderful. My children and my family are my life.”

“That is wonderful. Is the house for your entire family? I was going off the specs you sent, but it seemed a little off for a single family.”

“I do have a plan,” he evaded. “No man in your life? Is it safe to meet people you don’t know so near your home with no one around?”

“I am a grown woman with a growing business. Most of my clients don’t become violent. Not many assault charges filed by architects.”

“I suppose not.”

“If you are wondering about the security of the office space above the garage, I can always rearrange some things. Maybe put the stairs inside. A security system is also a viable option.”

“Such a wonderful mind, always working.”

“That is what pays the bills.”

“You have such a presence about you.”

“Mr. Walker, did you contact me about a home or something else?”

“Perceptive, Ms. Davis. Very perceptive.”

“Your bill will be sent to you in the form you indicated most convenient. Have a wonderful afternoon,” Angelina stood, gesturing to the door.

“No nonsense business persona,” Cort marveled. “Please sit. We can discuss the house.”

Angelina sat. The next hour and a half were filled with questions and changes. Cort was planning on moving his entire family into the home. The need for large open spaces and individual spaces made sense. Separate entrances were a must. No one wanted to live with people on top of one another all day, every day. The list on her tablet grew. She explained his structural options and offered compromises where she could.

“I have to say, I am impressed,” Cort studied her as she made notes. “I’m not an easy man to impress.”

“Thank you.”

“Angelina, the house will be impeccable.”

“Thank you. I can have this list of changes made within a few days. Once you approve them-”

“I have a confession,” Cort interrupted her. “The reason for my visit was twofold.”

“Fuck my life,” she whispered under her breath.

“I’m sorry. What was that?”

“My lucky night,” she repeated.

“I am looking to expand my family,” he said cautiously. “You have captivated me from the first time I saw your picture in the magazine. I love women who have a list of accomplishments. They can stand alone but choose to be in a relationship.”

She had to give this one credit. He was handsome. There was no creepy factor like Reginald, and he didn’t demand anything. Family was important to him, or else he wouldn’t be spending a fortune on the house laid out in front of them.

“I have been searching for someone to expand our family, to grow our love. She needs to be a professional in her own right. I can’t help it. I am attracted to a smart and successful woman. There has to be a spark. I felt it when I walked in, and I know you felt it too. It’s not so much about looks. It is a mutual meeting of mind and body. You, my beautiful Angelina Davis, check all my boxes.”

“You are asking me out?”

“It is a bit more than that. I want to ask your father to court you. My intent is marriage.”

“Why?”

There had to be something in the water. A chemical spill. That was the only reasonable explanation. She dated on and off for years. With more than her fair share of odd dates, Cort still managed to catch her by surprise. Angelina needed a minute to wrap her mind around his intentions. In the last few days, she failed as a fake girlfriend, had been fought over, bet on, claimed as a possession, offered a sex agreement with cash bonuses, and now an offer of marriage. Angelina looked around the room, anticipating someone popping out at any moment to tell her this was some kind of joke.

“You would fit perfectly. Emily is an accountant, Olivia is a gynecologist, and Isabella is a pharmaceutical rep. They are going to love you.”
