Angelina tried not to let her shock show when the woman snatched Max’s fork and dug into the plate of pasta Angelina was eating.

“Are we not getting dessert?” She scrunched up her nose.

“I was waiting on you,” Max informed her. “I know better than to bring out the chocolate cake without you being here.”

“You’re such a good boy,” Sam smiled. “Now, tell me all about this man of yours.” Her eyes shone with glee as she turned her attention to Angelina.

Angelina filled Jake’s mom in on her plight. Jake interrupted to add his input. By the time his mother was up to speed, Max had placed a tray of chocolate desserts on the table.

“If you don’t put that pasta on the menu, I will tell his highness you want to have brunch at the house to discuss your love life.”

“And I thought you loved me,” Jake muttered.

“It’s on,” Max affirmed. “Try this.”

Angelina watched as Max fed Sam a mouthful of a sinful-looking three-layered cake.

“Oh my Lord. That is the best thing I have ever put in my mouth,” she moaned. “Speaking of putting things in your mouth. I think talking through major issues is excellent advice. However, if he is reluctant to share, a girl can get more information after his guard is down. If slobbering on the knob gets him a little closer to your way of thinking, slobber away. If that doesn’t work, ride that pony like he is in the lead to win the Triple Crown. If he can’t make his brain cells work, he can’t lie. After a few times, he will deny you nothing.”

Angelina gasped. A piece of the decadent cake lodged in her throat. Coughing, her eyes watered as she tried to recover from the prim-looking woman’s advice.

“Didn’t mean to make you choke,” Sam worried, handing her a glass of water. “Why didn’t either of you tell me she was sensitive?”

“Sweetness isn’t a prude. She thinks she is a five, and he is a ten.”

“Nine,” she croaked.

“Ridiculous.”

“That was what we said,” Max mumbled.

“I know just what you need,” Sam preened. “When was the last time you had a spa day?”

“Um, never,” Angelina replied cautiously. “I mean, I go to the salon, but I don’t have girlfriends. I have them,” she gestured toward Jake and Max.

“Unacceptable,” Sam tsked. “Clear your calendar for this afternoon. We are going to the city for a spa afternoon. You are overdue. I do have to warn you. It is addicting. Once you feel the gloriousness, you would turn tricks on the street to feel it again.”

“I suppose I can do that,” she nodded.

It wasn’t like she was going to get anything done this afternoon. She could see where Jake got his charm and persuasiveness from. Angelina had no doubt the woman beside her was a force all her own.

“Perfect,” Sam cheered. “You will ride with me. It will help keep his highness in check for a few more weeks if he thinks I’m playing nice with Jake’s girlfriend. I dream of the day I go home, and he will have keeled over somewhere. I’m not lucky enough for him to have a heart attack in another woman’s bed, so I have to stick with a plain old heart attack or maybe a stroke. What does a woman have to do to get a burglary gone bad? That enormous pretentious house should be a beacon for thieves. All these years, and not one attempted home invasion. What is wrong with the criminals in this town?”

“The things we women must suffer through for our men,” Angelina sighed.

“We will get along just fine.”

Angelina grabbed her purse and tossed her keys to Jake. “You may want to hide my car. When Ben finds out I left without telling him, he will stop here first.”

“You didn’t tell him you were leaving again?” Jake groaned. “You realize there are only so many bruises I can cover, right?”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” his mother kissed his cheek. “Poor you. You put yourself in this position. Now your girlfriend has a big strong man chasing her cute little butt down. Deal with it.”

“I thought you loved me.”

“I do. You are the best thing that ever happened to me. I love my someday son-in-law, and after the good Lord and a hitman call his highness home, I will love those grandbabies too,” Sam kissed Max. “But I cannot tell you how wonderful it will be to spend the afternoon with another female. We can commiserate about being surrounded by the testosterone overload you all give off.”
