“No sprinkles.”

Angelina replied. “What are sprinkles?”

“Bodies. Sit still. I need to run outside for a minute. Move your ass off that chair, and you will not sit for a week.”

“Promises. Promises,” she drawled.

“Look out the window, and I will deliver.”

“Ben, there is a yard full of people out there led by my fairy godman’s father. By the time he is done, they will be ready to burn me at the stake, thinking I have bewitched half the town. I need to think of a way to handle this. Maybe we could talk about sexual favors later.”

“We are going to talk about a lot of stuff later. I already have this handled.”

“Really?”

“Trust me, Angelina. No one threatens you on my watch.”

Angelina sat on her chair. The door rolled open and snapped closed. Ben was dragging something behind him. Probably the rug that used to be under the conference table. She waited. Ben was outside doing Army Ken things. He didn’t want her to be seen. She was okay with that. She had no desire to be the focus of the mob growing outside.

The only sounds were car doors and people milling around, waiting for their leader. Daniel needed time to get his persona in place. He had to be the loudest voice to proclaim her supposed sins to all his followers. There was no yelling. It was unnerving. Angelina sat silently as cars came and went.

Angelina had no idea how long she sat there waiting for Ben to return. A muffled shriek ripped from her throat when her phone started singing, “It’s Raining Men.” It was Jake’s ringtone. Her shaking fingers couldn’t hold onto the phone. It bounced off her leg and landed on the floor with a thud.

Should she ignore it or act like nothing was out of the ordinary?

If she didn’t answer, he would be coming to find out what was wrong. Angelina didn’t want Jake’s shocked face to end up on camera. Diving onto the floor for her phone, she managed to get her fingers to answer it before he hung up.

“Hello,” she answered breathlessly.

“Sweetness,” Jake purred. “Do you think it is acceptable to leave your boyfriend hanging, anxiously waiting to see if he needs to start working on your defense or if Army Ken waved his magical pants wand and got you to forgive him?”

“Sorry,” Angelina gulped.

She was sweating. Her heart was pounding. Jake would be in his car on his way to her if she didn’t calm down. They would have melted ice cream, sprinkles, and all the other toppings before the mop and bucket arrived with the paper towels. She couldn’t let Jake be a part of that. It wasn’t his fault Angelina saw Daniel in the bathroom.

Ben sent for help. Mother of God. She was dating a guy that had an on-call clean-up crew. She had gone from being the other woman to hiding in her office, waiting for the witch hunt to disperse. She didn’t even know what the plan was. How could she explain it to Jake and Max when she had no idea herself?

“Angelina, are you okay? What happened? Did Ben leave again?”

Angelina had to think. Her mind raced, but nothing came out of her mouth. All she could picture was Jake’s heartbroken face when the cameras focused on him. They weren’t close, but it was his father. That had to count for something, right?

If she could only go back a few hours and change things. Why did she say she had pictures? She should have hauled Ben to the house and locked the door behind them. They could have pretended not to be home while she rode him. Padre would have had to stop back another time, preferably after he was heavily medicated. She could hear Jake’s voice but had no idea what he said.

“Max, something is wrong with our girl.”

She frantically scanned the room for a solution. Her brain clicked into gear when she saw her ruined panties on the floor. Riding Ben.

“Ben,” Angelina moaned.

Jake went silent.

“Oh God, yes,” she panted.

“Love of my life,” Jake whispered. “I don’t think our girl needs us. I believe Army Ken has had her in bed for the last few days.”

“Ben,” Angelina let out a strangled cry like she was close, rocking her chair while she smacked her hand off the desk.

“Not going to say that isn’t hot enough to make me want to bend you over the table, Shorty, but what are you doing?” Ben smirked at her.
