“Happy tears,” she hurriedly hiccuped. She learned quickly that Ben didn’t do well when she cried. The poor man was in for a rude awakening with three girls in the house.
“While you are crying, I have something to tell you.” Ben thumbed her tears away. “I retired. This was my last mission.”
“What?”
“I have you and the girls to think about. I don’t need the money. The girls are set to inherit a hefty amount. I want to spend my time with my family.”
“Ben, are you sure?”
“As sure as I was when I opened the door and saw you standing there in those black leggings. I knew you were the other half of my heart.”
“Ben,” Angelina complained, tears running down her face as she sobbed. “You can’t say things like that and not expect me to cry.”
Allie fussed in her arms. Ben lifted his other daughter into his arms, cradling them both while his wife cried. His heart broke to see her tears. How this happy tear bullshit worked was beyond him.
Angelina reached for a tissue to blow her nose when Allie started to cry. A second later, Mattie joined her. The look of horror on her husband’s face made her smile. He bounced them gently, but that only made them cry more. The look of horror faded into worry.
“What is wrong with them? Do they need a doctor? A different doctor? Just tell me, and I will get it for them. Little loves,” Ben pleaded. “Please stop crying. Daddy can’t take it.”
“Ben,” Angelina unlatched her top. “The doctor doesn’t have what our girls need.”
Settling Allie against her breast, she helped Ben position Mattie until she had both girls. Angelina’s heart melted. She has the best husband in the world. Who would have thought Army Ken would turn out to be so kind and sweet and attentive? He was going to be a great girl dad.
The door creaked as it began to open. Ben’s hand snaked out to slam it shut. The doctor’s objections were muffled on the other side of the door.
“He isn’t coming in here. He is not seeing your breasts when you are feeding our girls. Hell no. I’m not happy he delivered the girls, but that’s my fault. I could have demanded a woman if I had been here sooner. Just because he saw you once doesn’t mean it will ever happen again. He will die if he sees something as beautiful as you nursing our babies.”
Angelina sighed. And there was her Army Ken. She was surprised it took him this long to come unglued about the male doctor. The poor man was the only doctor available when Jake and Max drove her to the hospital.
“You are not seeing my girls. You will find a woman to care for her, or I will have her moved to a different hospital,” Ben growled, stepping outside the room. The door closed swiftly behind him.
“You will grow up to be strong women because we have to be able to put all these men in their place,” Angelina murmured to her daughters when she heard her father and Drake joining the argument. “Those men out there will drive us crazy, but they will love us until their last breath.”
Closing her eyes, she waited for her daughters to finish before she swaddled them and placed them in the bassinet beside her bed. Mattie and Allie were asleep, and she needed a nap. Dealing with the standoff outside her door could wait until later.
