“Got it,” Lucas slowly stood. “I’m not going to mess up this time.”

“Better not.” Rose hugged him. “Remember to get our stuff out of the house.”

“What about War-”

“It’s over. I will be fine. I promise. I’ll be the best bar bitch Bunny has ever had.”

“Just don’t try to cook.”

“I think your left eye is a little darker than your right. I could even that up for you before I leave.”

“Love you, Rosey.”

“Love you too, you big bonehead.” Rose dragged him in for another hug. “Don’t tell anyone where I am,” she said loud enough for only Lucas to hear.

“Enough of this lovey shit,” Tank growled.

“Is that a tear I see,” Rose teased.

“Was that I want to ride all the way to New Mexico on Roach’s lap?”

“Okay, that is my cue to get between the bus and the truck,” Rose said quickly.

Hurrying over to her car, she watched the bikes roll out as she got situated. The bus pulled out, and she eased out after it. She watched Lucas through the rearview mirror. He stood in the middle of the parking lot looking lost. He was on his own.

“Maybe it is better this way. Lucas can get his shit together. Warren can finally accept that it is over and move on. I get a fresh start. It all works out.”

As Rose settled into traffic on Route Ten, she realized she was heading eleven hundred miles into the great unknown.

“Time to get your big girl panties on.”

Chapter 4

Two days later, she drove through a gate and followed a long driveway deeper into the desert. The late afternoon sun baked the barren landscape. It looked the same in every direction: red sand and cactus with an occasional tumbleweed.

“Bunny doesn’t have to worry about me running. There is nothing but sand and dried-up dirt for miles and miles.”

Slowly driving up the winding road, she was shocked when the first buildings came into sight. The adobe-style bungalows dotted the landscape while the main building looked as if it had once been a church. It was added onto a few times over the years. The end result was an odd, rambling ranch-style building with a steeple in the middle and beer signs that lit up the outside.

Bikes were parked along the side of the building. Rose opted to follow the bus around the back to park beside an enormous garage. She watched as men tumbled out, stretched, and headed toward the main building.

“Eleven hundred miles crammed in those little seats,” Rose shuddered. Her body ached, and she was in a car by herself. She couldn’t imagine being crammed into that bus.

A knock on the passenger window brought her back to the here and now.

“You planning on locking yourself in there?”

“Sun is too hot to stay in that car for too long, Rosey.”

“Ladybug, you worry too much.” Rose pushed the door open and stepped out into the heat.

“It’s Cockroach,” he grumbled. “I can get in and out of places no one else can, and I’m hard to kill.”

“That last time was plain old luck,” Vulture reminded him.

“How did you get those road names? Wait. I don’t want to know. You are now Ladybug and Birdy.”

“Knock off the shit,” Vulture boomed.
