He bent to retrieve her cut lying on the floor where she dropped it when she came in. “You should be more careful with this.”

“I dropped it when someone scared the crap out of me.”

“Why weren’t you wearing it?”

“I didn’t want to get flour on it.”

Vulture frowned at her. “It wouldn’t be because you were trying to sneak out the kitchen window?”

Rose motioned to her shirt covered in flour. “Yeah. You caught me. I came to lull you into a carb coma and then shimmy my ass out through the kitchen window.”

“Why?”

“Why what?”

“Agree to stay?”

“What do you want me to say? My hopefully soon-to-be ex-husband decided I was more of a housekeeper or a placeholder with the optional booty call every few months. We grew apart. I filed for divorce. It happens all the time. Lucas, being Lucas, presented me with an opportunity to get away. It wasn’t my first choice, but I can’t say it is the worst. I accepted what life handed me without pitching a fit. End of story.”

“Warren isn’t going to give you up easily.”

Rose stopped kneading the bread dough. “You know Warren?”

“Rosey, tell me you started the coffee,” Roach pleaded as he stumbled through the door. “If we are going to take shifts watching our girl, the person going off has to make the coffee for the one starting.”

Vulture turned without a word and walked out the door.

Rose went back to kneading the bread. Her mind reeled. How did Vulture know Warren? Would he tell him where she was?

“Did I interrupt something?”

“No,” she said quickly. “Just chatting with Birdy.”

“Why are you up so early? Wait. What happened to that knife?” Roach picked up the knife Vulture left lying on the counter.

Rose took pity on him. Plus, starting the coffee gave her something to do that didn’t require answering his questions.

“Rosey?”

“Yeah,” she answered as she flopped the dough back in the bowl and covered it with a towel.

“Honey, you okay? You haven’t said anything mean to me in five minutes.”

“I’m making you coffee, so you have both eyes open before I bring you to your knees.”

“Now I’m not sure I should drink it.”

“Take your chances,” she shrugged. “What do you usually have for breakfast?”

“Rosey, you can’t poison us all at the same time to make a run for it.”

“Well, damn it. Ladybug, you have figured out my plan.”

“Want to tell me what happened to the knife?”

“I was opening a can.”

“Liar.”
