“We are good,” she amended, tucking her arm through Franny’s. “Stuck like glue.”

“That is what I thought,” he muttered on his way out the door.

Franny waited until Vulture followed him before she spoke up.

“You shove me into the pantry again, and I will have Tank change your room to one that has to share the bathroom.”

“I was being nice,” Rose gaped at her.

“I didn’t get to where I am today without a little grit to me.”

“Fine. The next time someone walks through the door, I will save Ladybug and Birdy.”

“I want to see you try that,” Franny laughed.

“I could totally do it,” Rose gave in and chuckled.

“You never asked what was in the warehouse.”

“I didn’t ask because I don’t need to know. Honestly, I don’t care. I know they aren’t choir boys. Not a one of them has tried to harm me. The only thing they asked for was to be fed dubiously cooked dinners and something baked.”

“You aren’t at all what I thought you would be when Tank told me he was bringing home help.”

“Thanks?”

“Today was the third warehouse to be hit. The first one where someone was killed. Each time they got away with everything without being caught by the surveillance system.”

“Inside job,” Rose said before she could stop herself. “Sorry. It was the first thought that popped into my head, and it just kind of came out.”

“You’re right,” Franny shrugged. “They think there is a mole. We are on lockdown until they find out who it is.”

“Rosey, honey, I need your phone,” Roach called through the kitchen door. “I’m coming in. Don’t throw shit at me. I want you, but don’t make me bleed to prove it.”

“They are all going to be a bit more cautious before they open that door from now on.”

“Ladybug, you can come in.”

“I, uh, need the key, too. Room search.”

Rose dug the key out of her pocket. “I have nothing to hide. You and Birdy have seen it all.”

“Not yet, but as soon as you get that husband of yours to sign the papers, I want first shot.”

“Aww,” Rose wiped a fake tear from her eye. “Biker romance,” she sniffled. “Has my heart going pitter-patter.”

“Is that a yes?” Roach winked at her.

“Nope. Not in this lifetime.”

“I’m hard to kill, my sweet Rosey,” he laughed as he kicked open the swinging door.

“Don’t tempt me to start trying,” Rose called after him.

Chapter 9

Warren sat at a patio table with Brooks by his side. The coffee in front of him was barely touched. Leaning back in the wrought iron chair, he gave the illusion of relaxation when it was the furthest thing from his mind. To the casual observer, it looked like two friends out for a hit of caffeine. He glanced at his watch and then at the spa across the street. In another five minutes, the quiet street would be anything but. Until then, he would watch and wait for confirmation.

Warren tuned out Brooks. His fingers went to the ring on the gold chain around his neck. Having a piece of her so close to him helped him focus. Warren couldn’t afford to lose focus. More than his life would be on the line if he got distracted.
