Page 30 of The Warren Effect

“If it were easy, you wouldn’t have a Lamborghini in your garage beside the custom chopper and the Maserati.”

“True.”

They placed their cups in the dish bin by the door and walked down the street toward the rental car.

“Where to next, boss?”

Warren let out a string of curses as they approached the car. The tires were flat—all four of them.

“Getting bolder,” Brooks frowned, walking around the side of the car. “Oh shit. Hope we got the extra insurance because he left us a message.”

Warren walked around the side of the car. Killer was etched into the paint across the passenger side.

“We got the extra insurance, right?”

Warren nodded, deep in thought.

“Not our problem. Call the company, and they can tow it.”

Warren hit a button on his phone. The plastic case protested his grip.

“Lock it down. Everything,” he clipped out. “No more new jobs until I give the all clear. Finish the assignments and shut the company down. Ramp up for retaliation.”

“One more, and we can go get Rose.”

“The scared little asshat who cannot come out and face me like a man is going to die slowly. He will wish he never crawled out of whatever cave he came from.”

“There is a good point to this,” Brooks thought out loud as he stood beside Warren.

“Please tell me what is the positive point from having someone following us? Have you forgotten we aren’t exactly law abiding citizens?”

“We provide a public service. A very needed public service.”

“We have been one step behind this bastard for the last year. I am tired of not knowing who is fucking with my life. When I find him, I am going to end him slowly.”

Two women gasped as they hurried the other way.

“Keep a lid on it. Busy street. Not everyone is as used to creating more oxygen as we are.”

Warren grumbled under his breath but kept walking. The street was clearing. Curiosity won out, and people were flocking to the flashing lights. Business gave way to tidy homes as the downtown faded behind them.

“Anyway, the light at the end of the tunnel in this situation,” Brooks continued. “At least he is watching us and not Rose.”

Warren grunted in agreement, plotting as he walked. Nearing the corner, he knew it was their chance to grab a cab back to the airport.

“Florida and then home. I can’t stay away any longer. I can’t leave my wife unprotected.”

“Oh, I’d say Rose has lots of protection. The only task worse than tracking down the numbnuts hunting us is trying to get your wife to forgive your dumb ass.”

“You remember you work for me, right?” Warren grumbled. He hid a grin as he curled his fingers into a fist and punched Brooks’ arm.

“Bastard,” Brooks flexed his fingers. “My hand is going numb.”

Warren waved at a cab drawing closer. His lights flickered, and the driver stopped at the curb.

“Airport, please,” Warren smiled at the man.

“I’ll get you there as quick as I can. Going to have to take the side streets,” the cabby warned. “I just heard on the radio some rich guy locked himself in the cooler tube two blocks up. Police have the street shut down because they had to call for some kind of heavy saw. I guess they are having one hell of a time removing a frozen chunk of idiot from the tank.”
