“Kid, take the cash and the bag and go on about your day. I have a feeling you will have a better job by tonight.”

“That is a lot of money.”

“Buy a nicer house in a safe neighborhood. Take your girl on a date she will always remember when you propose,” Warren instructed.

“I don’t know what to say.”

“Not a thing.”

Warren smiled as he got in the rental. He waited until Brooks was in before cautiously driving down the street toward the interstate. They needed to get back to the plane. He was getting bolder. If the stalker was willing to sacrifice an accomplice, he was getting ready to make his final move. Warren had to get to Rose. It didn’t matter how or who he had to go through. Warren was done waiting.

Chapter 13

“Ladybug, is this really necessary? Who is hiding in my bathroom?”

After their meeting, what was left of the kitchen had been boarded up. Dinner had been hot dogs someone roasted over a fire pit in the yard. Rose wasn’t about to complain. A fire roasted hot dog beat whatever Franny dug out of the freezer any day.

Roach glued himself to her side after church was over. It was subtle at first. Two hours later, the subtlety was gone. He insisted on walking her everywhere she went. Rose wasn’t allowed to go to the bathroom by herself. Ladybug escorted her to the door and made her wait until he made sure no one was inside before she could go in. It was getting old quick.

“Get used to it, my Rosey.”

“Ladybug, don’t let it go to your head. I let you in my room because I don’t have a choice. If you end up in my bed after I fall asleep tonight, it will be the last night you fall asleep.”

“Rosey, I’m wearing you down.”

She waited by the door while he checked the bathroom. Roach checked her closet, under the bed, and ensured both windows were locked before allowing her inside.

“Are the hoe-leaders getting this much attention?”

“No one is after them.”

“How can you be so sure? Why do you automatically think someone is after me? I’m not a member of your club. Bar bitch, hired help, keeper of the baking calendar, those things are me. The object of fascination for some weirdo that is a no.”

Rose didn’t want to admit that the only person she could think of who would blow up a kitchen was her husband. Cat and mouse wasn’t his style. He was more like a bulldozer clearing everything in his path. But that only worked for things he wanted. Rose wasn’t sure that was her.

Roach tapped on his phone before walking slowly around the room, holding it close to anything and everything.

“Does everyone have one of those detector apps? Think I can talk Bunny into putting one on my phone?”

“Not likely, sweetheart. All clear. I’ll be right outside the door unless you want me to keep you company.”

“Ladybug,” Rose fluttered her lashes.

“Yes, my hot little Rose?”

“Roach,” Rose flirted, walking her fingers up his chest. “I would rather walk across the desert naked than have you stare at me while I sleep. That’s creepy.”

“I would give everything I have to see that.”

“Nope. I walk alone, been through the desert on a horse with no name, and I will survive.”

“Nice. I see what you did there.”

“Are you going to sit outside my door all night?”

“I’m on the outside, waiting on a woman, knocking on heaven’s door. That is unless you want to let me into your bed of roses.”

Rose picked up a blanket from the end of her bed. “Here,” she handed it to him. “Wouldn’t want you to catch a cold out in the hall.”
