“We are taking him as collateral. Just in case you change your mind.”

“I’m not going to change my mind.”

“Rosey, don’t do this,” Lucas gurgled.

“So, I’m supposed to just stand here and watch them shoot you?” She cried. “This is the last time I bail your ass out. Do you hear me? The. Last. Time.”

“Rosey.”

“My mind is made up.” Rose reached down and sat him up. Tears filled her eyes when she saw how dark the bruises on his face were getting. “I need you to do something for me, and don’t fuck it up.”

“Don’t go with them,” Lucas pleaded with one eye swelled shut and the other well on its way to matching.

“Tomorrow after we leave, and they let you go,” Rose continued on, ignoring his plea. “I need you to come back to the house and get the rest of my stuff out of here. Put it in storage. I will text you the address of the one I rented and the address of the apartment. The lease is paid for the next six months. That gives you a safe place to stay while you get your shit together. Make sure you take your stuff, too.”

“Don’t-”

Rose silenced him with a glare. “There is one more thing. You cannot tell anyone where I went—as in, not another living soul.”

“But-”

“Promise me,” Rose pressed.

“Please, Rosey, don’t do this.”

“It’s already done. Mr. President and I made a deal. Do this for me. He isn’t coming after me. He hasn’t cared for me in that way for a long time. I need to get away. This isn’t what I had planned, but it is what family does for each other.”

“I’m sorry. I’m such a screw-up Rosey.”

“Promise me you will clear out the rest of the boxes and not say a word to anyone.”

“I promise,” Lucas whispered.

“Now that the after school special is over, can we get on with it?”

“Aging yourself with that statement,” Rose winked. “Do you have a name, or should I just give you one?”

“Prez or Tank works just fine.”

“Oh good. Being so cute and cuddly, I’ll just call you Bunny.”

Roach coughed.

“Tomorrow at six, we roll out. Be at Aces bar, or you can find what is left of your brother in the dumpster in the back.”

Cockroach and Vulture lifted Lucas off the floor. Dread washed over her as they walked out the door. Only when the door closed behind them did she consider what she had just done. She gave her life over to them to save her brother.

“Rose, what have you gotten yourself into now,” she murmured as her legs gave way and her ass hit the floor.

Chapter 2

“Thank you for taking all of this for me. You are a lifesaver.”

Rose smiled at the men carrying the last give-away pile out the door. She was sitting on the floor, wondering how to pull this off, when they backed in the drive. Wracking her brain for a loophole hadn’t gotten her anywhere.

She considered calling Warren, but since she was the one who filed the paperwork to become an ex-wife, that was not a discussion she wanted to have.

Hey, I know I’m about to be your ex-wife, but could you do me one more smallish favor?
