Chapter 16

“Time out,” Rose shook her head. “We are okay with office romance? Doesn’t that get tricky?”

“No. Most of them are some kind of friend-with-benefits situation. It is stressful trying to keep a partner in this line of work. They all understand.”

“You don’t say.”

Warren grinned.

Rose slid her hands up his chest, stopping when she got to his shoulders.

“Let me see if I have this correct,” she began. “You are an assassin for a company that we own. You served with Bunny and Birdy, and I’m here to be watched over because you have some sort of fan stalker situation going on for the past year, which is why you left me.”

“I didn’t leave you.”

“What would you call it? And if the next words out of your mouth are because I needed protection, rethink that.”

“If there wasn’t a threat, I would have been at home with you where I belong.”

“What else don’t I know? Is Brooks really a manwhore, or is it all an act?”

“No. He licks more pussy than a cat does.”

“Birdy is a softy.”

“From the very first cinnamon roll.”

“You take out people who are dangerous.”

“More oxygen for the rest of us.”

“And this has all been going on for years.”

“Yes.”

“Who is Lucas in trouble with this time?”

“Baby, the list is shorter if you ask who doesn’t want a piece of him.”

“Did he get the boxes out of the house?”

“I put them in storage with mine.”

Rose let out a long, low whimper and let her head fall on his shoulder. Her brain refused to work anymore today. All she wanted was to sit on his lap and soak up his nearness. She wasn’t ready to forgive him just yet. It soothed her jagged pieces that he did this because someone was after him. However, someone was after him because of his occupation. Talk about a double-edged sword.

A knock on the door had him wrapping his arms around her tighter. He wanted more time with her. Having her near him was too hard to give up after he had gone so long without.

“What?” He grunted without moving.

“Need you out here. Since you are talking, your wife didn’t kill you,” Brooks called.

“Wait,” Rose stopped him before he could get off the bed.

Warren paused.

“How long?”

“How long? What part?”
