I bark, “What?”

They share a look like they’re debating on which of them is going to go first. Even though I was just out and running for hours, my wolf is still on edge. If they don’t start talking fast, I won’t be held responsible for my actions.

Mayer clears his throat, his voice tentative, “The rogue was questioned and let us know that he was paid to come onto pack lands.” I growl so loudly that Mayer’s eyes widen in panic. He’s quick to add, “They were told to look out for a human woman and to kill her.”

I stand from my desk and flip it over in one fluid motion. A red haze covers my vision as I start to destroy my office. When strong arms wrap around me and pull me away from the window I was just about to launch a paperweight through, I fight against them.

“Crew,” my dad’s voice pulls me back from the haze just enough that I don’t turn and rip his throat out, “calm down. I know you’re pissed, but you need to channel that energy. You need to use it to destroy the person who wanted to harm your mate.”

My jaw drops and I turn to look at my dad. “You know?”

“It would be hard not to,” there’s a hint of amusement in his voice. “I had my suspicions the first day and then the longer I watched you both, the surer I became.”

“You didn’t come to me and tell me I was being an asshole and doing the wrong thing.” I don’t even know why I say it, but it just slips from my lips.

“You’re the Alpha now,” he shoots back at me with a shrug. “If you wanted my advice you would come to me. I didn’t need to throw it at you and try to influence your thoughts and feelings.”

I narrow my eyes at him because he has never said something like that to me before and he’s never stopped himself from giving me advice, even when I didn’t want it.

I look toward Mayer who is a little pale. I can’t blame him exactly considering the state of my office. I grunt the only thing that matters, “Who?”

“Trina,” Mayer whispers and renewed anger flares inside of me.

“Told you,” my wolf growls.

If this weren’t such a serious situation, I think he would be laughing at me right now. As it is, our mate’s life was put in danger and now we’ll have to fight that much harder to have her accept us. And it’s all Trina’s fault.

“It’s not all her fault,” my wolf grunts, “you had a hand in this as well. If you hadn’t spent the last few years going through females like they’re water, then maybe we wouldn’t have jealous she-wolves thinking they’re going to gain something by the death of our mate.”

The thought of Elodie dying has another growl ripping from my throat. My hands itch with the need to wrap them around Trina’s throat.

“I’m going to kill her,” I growl, my wolf lending me some of his power.

“Good,” my dad nods as a look of pride crosses his face.

I look at my dad and scrub a hand over my face. “I don’t need the advice of the former Alpha of Golden Summit.” He arches an eyebrow and I take a deep breath. “However, I do need the advice of my father.” His eyes soften. “What do I do about my mate? Do I go after her?”

When Dad looks at me for a long time, I start to squirm under his gaze. I have no idea what he sees, but he suddenly sighs, and his entire body relaxes. “Crew, the entire pack has felt the positive ripples of having its Luna here. You saw how the pups played with her, right?” I nod and he gives me a small smile. “Before I give you my advice, I’m curious about why you resisted the bond.”

“She’s human,” my voice is small and the words, now that I know my mate, feel like a lie.

Yes, that’s why I resisted the bond, but the lie is within the way I reduced my mate to something so simple. Something that doesn’t even matter. I didn’t want to see past the fact that she isn’t a she-wolf, but now that I have, all I see is her fierce heart and her bright soul.

“It was wrong.” I swallow hard. “I was scared that the pack wouldn’t accept her, but that was before I allowed myself to really see her.”

There’s an edge of steel in his voice, “Are you still concerned about the pack accepting a human Luna?”

“No,” I growl, “and if anyone doesn’t want to accept her, then they can find a new pack.”

Dad smirks at me with pride in his eyes. “Those who have met Elodie have already accepted her without even knowing that she’s the Luna the Goddess intended for the pack.” His shoulders slump slightly, and he shakes his head. “It won’t be easy to go after her. There is a chance that she won’t accept what you are, what we are all, but I think she will.”

“The Goddess doesn’t make mistakes,” I murmur softly.

“Exactly,” he agrees and claps his hands before standing and starts to head out of my office. I arch an eyebrow and he chuckles. “I’m going to gather your mother. Meet you in the backyard?”

“Golden Summit pack,” I put out through the mind link for the entire pack instead of answering him, “everyone is required to meet behind the packhouse in five minutes.”

My wolf growls his approval as we leave our destroyed office behind as we stalk our way through the house. I watch closely as everyone starts to file into the backyard. I’m sure there are some people unable to make it on such short notice, but they’ll be informed about what happens here.
