I should get up and go to the hospital, but the pain is debilitating, and I can’t move.

Relief fills me when I hear the jingle of keys and then the door starts to open. Tilly being home means that I can get some help.

She might be a werewolf, but I still trust her and she’s still my best friend. I hope I didn’t hurt her feelings when I woke her up and told her I needed to leave the pack.

The pack. What a strange fucking thing to think about. Tilly is part of a pack. She’s a werewolf.

Once I got on the road, my mind was able to sort through the information I was given. It became clear very quickly that I wasn’t afraid of Tilly or any of the wonderful people I had met while visiting her home. And the thought of Crew being my mate had me curious and a little turned on.

The scent of burning wood and crisp apples pulls me from my thoughts, but I’m sure I’m just imagining things as I sink farther into the couch, feeling some relief from the pain and awful feeling for the first time since I started the drive to come back to school. It’s gotten so much worse since then that I’m grateful for even a small reprieve.

“Little moon,” Crew’s gruff voice, filled with relief and concern, has me popping my eyes open as my body jolts. I start to fall off the couch, but before I can hit the ground, he’s there and I’m being cradled in his arms. “Are you okay?”

I stare up into his blue eyes and my lungs expand in a way they haven’t been able to since I left his territory. My hands are shaking as I cup his face, my eyes roaming over him and soaking up every detail.

“You’re here,” I breathe.

“Of course. I’m where my mate is, which is right where I belong,” his voice has that echo quality which tells me that his wolf is lending his voice to his words as well.

A sob works its way up my throat, and I throw my arms around his neck and bury my face in the crook of his neck. Normally, I would be worried about looking weak in front of him because I’m crying, but there’s nothing I can do to stop the tears right now.

His hand soothes up and down my back, every touch helping my body to relax and melt against him. “I’ve got you, my mate. I’m sorry it took me so long to get to you, but I had some things to take care of first. I’m here now and I’m not letting you go.”

My fingers twist in the shirt he’s wearing, and I press my body against him, needing the contact as it sooths what has been hurting inside of me. He holds me close and rocks me. My tears dry up and I pull back to stare up at him, surprised, again that he’s here.

His eyebrows pull together as he searches my face. “Are you feeling better?”

“How did you know I wasn’t feeling well?”

Crew rubs the spot on his chest over his heart, understanding in his gaze. “I knew because it was the bond making us both sick and causing us pain. We were too far apart from each other, and the bond was punishing us for it.”

My eyes widen, “We can’t ever be apart?”

“We can, but after the bond is completed. Since we both have felt the bond, it pulls us together until we complete it or reject it,” he explains.

My voice raises an octave, “Reject it?”

“It’s very rare but sometimes mates are rejected,” his voice is strained like he hates answering the question.

I don’t blame him. The idea of rejecting him has pain piercing my heart. I couldn’t do it.

Something clicks in my head and my eyebrows furrow together. “Were you going to reject me?”

Crew’s eyes slide closed, and a pained expression crosses his face. “I don’t know,” he whispers, the words shards of glass between us. “I was afraid,” he admits, “of how the pack would react to a human Luna. I was wrong. I should have never underestimated the pack or you.”

“How are you so confident that they’d accept me now?”

His blue eyes sparkle as his hands dive into my hair and he holds me place. His lips ghost over mine as he speaks, “Because they have already accepted and love you.” I start to shake my head, not understanding what he’s saying. “Last night I told the pack who their Luna is before exposing a traitor and bringing her to justice.”

I gasp, “You told the pack?”

“Of course, the pack deserves to know who their true Luna is. You have no idea how many your light touched within the pack. You weren’t even trying,” he chuckles, “but it happened anyway.”

“Your pack is amazing.”

“Our pack,” he corrects me.

I have more questions, so many more questions, but they dissolve as his lips meet mine. I moan and he swallows down the sound, our tongues dancing together as we find each other again. Kissing Crew feels like coming home.
