She nods slowly, like she’s processing my words. “Elodie, from the moment you walked into my office it was clear to me that you have a good head on your shoulders. Far too many students come to college and use their newfound freedom in the wrong way. You haven’t done that.”

I understand what she’s not saying. I came to college to learn, not to party. I didn’t get caught up in the seduction of not having someone tell me what to do and when to do it like so many who came directly from their parent’s house. But the thing is, I never had those parents who told me what to do, when to be home, or set expectations for me.

I had to do that for myself.

“If your professors are okay with it, I don’t see why we can’t make this work for you,” Mrs. Deveraux confirms.

My shoulders relax and I slump back into my chair. I didn’t even realize how tense I was.

“Thank you, I appreciate your time and your support.”

We chat about the logistics for a few minutes before she makes me promise to come back to campus for graduation. She implores me, “It’s something you don’t want to look back on and regret missing.”

“There’s no way I’ll miss walking across that stage to get my diploma,” I assure her.

Mrs. Deveraux surprises the hell out of me when we both stand, and she comes around her desk to give me a hug. There’s laughter in her voice when she tells me, “You’ve been one of the easiest students I’ve ever worked with. I would do just about anything to have a million of you.”

“Thanks for having my back,” I mutter, emotions clogging my throat.

While I had some good teachers and guidance counselors throughout my grade school years, they always looked at me through the lens of being a foster care kid. I started working with Mrs. Deveraux while standing on my own two feet and free of the system.

After leaving her office, I rush back to my apartment. I’m so damn excited to tell Crew what I’ve decided and what I’ve done to make it a reality. When I walk into the living room, Crew is hunched over the coffee table with some papers spread out in front of him and he’s on the phone, annoyance written all over his face.

He has told me about his deep hatred of all the paperwork associated with the pack. I have some ideas to streamline some of the processes, but I haven’t brought it up to him yet. Before I start making suggestions, I want to see how it all works.

“Yes, Mayer,” he barks into the phone, clearly exasperated. He tips his head back and pinches the bridge of his nose before he blows out a breath. “Just leave it on my desk. I’ll take care of it.”

My heart aches at the knowledge that Crew has put what has been his top priority on the back burner to follow me. Because I’m his mate. If that doesn’t say love, I don’t know what does.

Crew hangs up his phone and tosses it onto the couch next to him. When he takes a deep breath, his eyes snap open and glow bluer as he looks at me. The way he moves with such fluid grace as he stands up and stalks toward me has me desperately wanting to step back.

Or maybe make a run for it.

I know he would catch me; that would be the best part.

“Don’t run from me, little moon,” the gravel in his voice tells me his wolf is close to the surface.

I tease him, my tone coy, “Are you sure you don’t want to catch me?”

The low growl that comes from him vibrates through my entire body and has goosebumps covering my skin as the hairs at the back of my neck standing on edge. “I’d fucking love to catch you. I’d devour you,” there’s a promise and a warning in his voice.

“Maybe I’ll let you devour me after I tell you where I’ve been today.”

Crew’s eyebrow arches, curiosity shining in his eyes. “Oh? I thought you were going to campus. What have you been up to, Elodie?”

“I did go to campus,” I hedge.

He makes a humming sound and steps closer to me. “Maybe I’m not asking the right question,” he muses. “What did you do on campus?”

“I had a meeting,” I tell him honestly but without giving him the answer he’s looking for.

As he steps closer, I back up until my back is pressed against the wall and Crew plasters our bodies together. Those damn tingles almost manage to distract me from the game we’re playing. I love them, but they are disarming in a way I’m still not used to.

“Tell me,” he demands, his wolf growling along with his words and making me want to forget all of my news and climb up my mate’s body instead.

“I met with my advisor about something important.” I bite my lip as Crew stares down at me, excitement brewing in the depths of his blue eyes. “I had already contacted my professors about it and now it’s approved. Official.”

“What’s official?”
