“She hasn’t been back since Christmas,” Mayer comments and I nod.

Tilly might be six years younger than me, but we were close growing up. There weren’t a lot of other wolves who would understand the pressure of being the Alpha’s kids. It wasn’t until I started to go to other packs with my dad and then Alpha training that I became close to other soon-to-be Alphas. They understood the pressure even more than Tilly did, but we never lost our connection.

I’ve missed her. Even though she can be a pain in my ass. She is all about waiting for her mate, which is great for her, but that also means she is vocal about her dislike of the number of bedmates I’ve had. She doesn’t even really know the extent of my pleasurable activities; and she shouldn’t.

“Let’s go and greet her,” I say over my shoulder as I’m heading out the door.

Excitement fills me and my wolf starts to bark and practically hop around in my mind. I realize quickly that it’s not just my excitement I’m feeling, but my wolf’s as well. I might love my sister, but this level of anticipation at seeing her is new and different. It makes me curious and suspicious.

“Crew,” my mom’s voice fills my mind, “are you on your way? We’ve brought Tilly and Elodie into the packhouse and are in the main living room.”

“I’m heading out of my office now,” I respond to her and cut the link.

Elodie.

“Beautiful name,” my wolf murmurs softly in a way I’ve never heard from him before.

My wolf, like most Alpha wolves, tends to be all about violent action. Their instincts drive the same kind of reactions in our human counterparts. It’s one of the things that makes us great Alphas for our packs. We have a drive to protect, at any cost, and don’t shy away from violence and death when it is required.

Golden Summit is a larger pack and has earned a lot of respect from not only other packs, but rogues as well. It’s not often that rogues come onto my territory. If they do, it’s usually because they need aid of some sort and not because they’re looking to cause destruction.

The rogue wolves of our world are without a pack for different reasons. Some of them have been kicked out of their packs for legitimate reasons. It’s not dissimilar to humans. There are bad humans out there who don’t care who they harm. Wolves are the same way, even though our instincts are as pack animals.

They’re anomalies within our world, but that doesn’t mean they should be taken lightly. In fact, they should be feared because without the pack connection, wolves will go feral. We thrive living within a community that is built around a hierarchy of protection and connection.

The wolves who become rogues because they need help or the few outliers who have never known pack life are completely different from feral rogues who want to cause harm. Those are the kinds of lone wolves who can be integrated back into pack life.

All thoughts of rogues fly from my mind when I’m halfway down the second staircase from the third floor where my office is located. The scent of hibiscus and spun sugar hits me like a fucking brick wall.

“Mate,” my wolf roars in my head.

I stumble a step and grip the banister to stop myself from rolling down the last of the staircase. What the fuck is happening right now? My mate is here? How is that fucking possible?

“What the fuck do you mean ‘mate’?” I snarl at my wolf, “You can’t be fucking serious. Now? After all this time? I don’t need a mate.”

“Speak for yourself,” he throws back at me. “I’ve always wanted my mate. I let you play with she-wolves because I knew you wouldn’t listen to me and had lost hope in our mate. I never lost hope. You won’t be keeping me from my mate,” there’s a warning in my wolf’s voice that I know I should heed, but resentment is swirling in my gut.

Where the fuck has she been? Why now? Is this some kind of set-up by my parents? Is Tilly involved?

I’ve been running this pack just fine without a mate. I’ve come to terms with not having a Luna. Now she’s here?

When I step inside the living room, I freeze in the entryway. I know my parents and sister are in the room, but that’s not who has my attention. A woman is standing near where Tilly is lounging on a couch like she’s not sure if she should sit or not. I can feel the tension wafting off her and it puts me on edge, even more than I already was just by her presence.

She’s all curves with an ass I want to sink my teeth into. Her hair is a beautiful auburn color and falls in gentle waves down to her mid-back. There’s plenty of length there for me to wrap around my fist as I fill her with my cock from behind.

Maybe out in the woods underneath the full moon.

My wolf howls in appreciation and agreement in my mind, begging me to plaster my front to her back and sink our teeth into where her neck and shoulder meet. That’s where she should be marked. It would make her the Luna of Golden Summit even without the official ceremony.

“Mark her,” my wolf demands.

My parents and sister are sitting there staring at me with wide, curious eyes. For once, they’re all silent. I’m sure they suspect what is happening here. I’m tempted to give into my wolf and what he wants knowing that deep down it’s what I want too. Before I can step closer to the woman, something bubbles up into my mind as I catch something in her scent.

Human.

My mate is a human.

How the fuck can the Luna of Golden Summit be a human? It’s not uncalled of within the shifter community, but it’s far from common. That might explain why it’s taken my mate so long to find me. The realization that this is Tilly’s friend and guest smacks into me as her head turns quickly toward me.
