Rosa fills me in, “We weren’t, but Zorro and Ruby insisted we head back early. They said they could handle the rest.”

We stand here for a few minutes making idle chitchat about shit that doesn’t really matter until I notice a fiery red mop of hair that has to belong to one woman in particular.

Rosa glances over and stares at Astra, who’s leaning across the bar, ordering a drink. “Who’s that?”

I meet my gaze with hers. “Astra. She owns the cat café where Oakleigh’s putting up some of her artwork.”

Rosa takes another sip of her drink. “You fuck her yet, or is there another reason you’re practically undressing her in front of us?”

I snap my eyes over in Rosa’s direction. “No, I haven’t.”

A shit-eating grin spreads across Rosa’s face. “Ah, now it makes sense. You want to. It’s why you’re staring so hard.”

I shake my head. “No, I don’t. She’s not the kind of woman you fuck around with for one night. I’m not going after her. I’m here for someone who doesn’t mind a one-and-done.”

Rosa rolls her eyes. “Come on, man. Be honest with yourself.”

Axel chuckles lightly. “Rosa’s always going to tell you exactly how she feels.”

“I can see that,” I comment.

Rosa scans her eyes up and down my body. “Have you been thinking about her a lot?”

I don’t know why, but for some reason, I want to be honest with her, and I am. “I can’t get her out of my fucking head.”

“Then why not dip your feet in the water? You obviously want to.” She’s right. I do want to, and nothing’s ever stopped me before.

I turn to look at her, my eyes narrowing. “Astra’s not just any random piece of ass. I don’t know. I just don’t want to do what I do to others.”

Rosa shrugs, taking yet another sip of her drink. “All women are the same until they’re different, Python. If you wanna go for her, then go for her. Fuck, you’re here for good, right? What’s stopping you?”

I suppose that’s my whole hold-up with this thing.

I’m so used to going from city to city that I never really imagined what it would be like to be with a woman who I could actually see myself with.

All I see right now is how we’d be a beautiful match, but I don’t know too much about her personality.

What I have seen, I do like.

The fact of the matter is, in my life, relationships are complicated and even dangerous.

Being too close to someone can easily be fatal, especially when you’re part of a club like I am.

But still, there’s something about Astra that makes me want to risk everything just to see if we could work.

I’m just going to think it’s nothing more than me being stuck in one place for a little too long.

“Look, just have fun, man,” Axel chimes in, lending support. “It’s your first time settling down, so take the time to figure out what you want. Okay?”

I’ll take the time, but I know what I want, and it’s the gorgeous woman sipping on a drink across the bar—whose eyes are glued on mine.

She’s sipping on a mojito, her eyes scanning the crowd just like mine was moments ago.

Our gazes stay trained on each other’s, and for a second, time seems to stand still.

My heart pounds in my chest until she smiles.

It’s an inviting smile that makes my heart race.
