I park my car on the side of the street, only a few paces away from the gate, and take a deep breath before I get out.

With the cat carrier in my hands, I muster up the courage to walk up to the gate and press the metal button.

It feels like an eternity before a man’s gruff voice crackles over the intercom. “What do you want?”

I try to keep my voice from shaking, but my nervousness can be heard. “I’m here to see Oakleigh.”

There’s a brief pause, and then the gate buzzes open.

As I step inside, I take in the sights and sounds surrounding the clubhouse.

There are a couple of cars, an SUV, and a few motorcycles on the cobblestone driveway.

There are even a couple of guys working under the veranda on their bikes, who eye me up curiously.

They’re probably wondering who the hell I am and why the fuck I’m here.

Then there are a chosen few who ogle me, not caring that I see them doing so.

I swallow hard, not understanding how Oakleigh says this place is bright and welcoming.

It certainly doesn’t feel that way right now.

If anything, it feels like they don’t want me here.

One guy specifically won’t stop staring at me.

He’s younger, with a dark five o’clock shadow and very thick eyebrows.

I’d say he’s in his early thirties, and he mutters something to the guy behind him.

Both of them are working on their bikes, and the one who can’t tear his eyes away from me stares.

He’s staring so hard at me that it’s like he’s trying to memorize every feature of my body.

Suddenly, someone clears their throat to my right and I turn to see the one man who I can’t get off my mind—Python.

He inhales sharply and looks over at his buddy under the veranda.

The look he’s giving him isn’t a happy one.

No, not at all. It’s a silent warning.

I swallow hard and break through the tense silence. “I’m here to see Oakleigh.”

Python tears his attention back in my direction. “Yeah, I heard. I came out to get you since she’s tied up.”

Okay, this is my way to get out of this. “If she’s tied up, I can come back later. It’s no big deal.”

Python chuckles. “Come on, Astra. They don’t bite, but I might.” He playfully wiggles his eyebrows, which offers me some sense of semblance.

This isn’t exactly what I expected to see.

Oakleigh’s been mentioning the club every now and again every time I talk to her.

She says it’s a friendly, welcoming place, but I don’t feel very welcome right now.

Add that to the fact I know these men and women are capable of violence, and I’m a little more anxious than usual.
