I shrug, “I added a couple of new pieces of furniture, but other than that it’s the same. Or mostly the same I guess. There are a couple of cats who found homes, and a couple who needed a safe place to land.”

She smiles lightly, brushing her golden brunette hair back behind her shoulders. “After everything you’ve been through, you think the world would eat you up and suck the kindness out of you, but I’m glad it hasn’t.”

She’s not the only one. “Me too,”

My throat is suddenly dry, so I take a sip of my drink and tell her something I haven’t told any of my other friends. “I met a guy,”

Daniela raises both of her brows in surprise. “A guy? Tell me more. What’s his name? What’s he do for a living? Is he hot?”

Her questions come out faster than rounds from an AK-47.

I take another sip, kind of thinking I need some alcohol. “His name is Python, and?—”

Daniela spits out. “Sorry, did you say Python? What kind of name is that, one a felon has?”

I swallow hard, not knowing if Daniela will be supportive or not.

She comes from money, from a very luxurious family who’s always done well.

She’s the kind of woman who’s never known what it is to struggle, and while I’m glad she hasn’t had to struggle, she tends to judge a book by its cover.

“Python is part of a motorcycle club here in Chihuahua,”

Daniela is quiet as a mouse, naturally processing what I’ve just told her.

She takes a sip of her iced cappuccino and inhales slowly, “Is he dangerous, or?”

What a question.

I shrug, “I’m sure he is, but not to me. He’s . . . oddly protective. I was at their clubhouse a week ago and?—”

Daniela interrupts me, “Whoa. Hold up. You were at a biker gang’s clubhouse? What the hell were you doing there?!”

Sighing, I can’t hide my annoyance. “If you’d let me finish telling you, you’d know by now,” I pause for a moment just to see if Daniela is going to continue, but she lets me speak.

“He’s friends with one of the artists who I’m featuring in the cafe. The day she came in, he was with her. She invited me over to have a couple of drinks and hang out with the women there.”

Daniela casts an accusatory look, “She, huh? You sure she isn’t his girlfriend, or worse, his wife?”

She’s only trying to make sure I don’t fall into any sort of trap. “Yeah, she’s only a friend. She’s with one of the guys in the clubhouse.”

Daniela tries to hide her pessimism, but the second she frowns I know she’s not entirely supportive. “Are you sure that’s a good idea, given your history and all? I mean, getting involved with someone in a biker club could just be more trouble.”

I stare down at my hands for a moment before answering, “I know, but there’s something about him that makes me want to give him a chance. He’s different. He’s kind, and he’s?—”

“Trouble. All men tied to organizations like that are trouble. Cartels. Gangs. Bikers. They’re all the same thing. They’re dangerous, and if you get too close you’re going to end up getting killed. Take it from someone who grew up here.”

“I’ll admit his life isn’t ‘normal’, but I’m not going to cast him aside. I have a good feeling about him,” I whisper, almost in disbelief. “Being around him could be risky, sure, but I want to see if it’s worth the risk. He overheard me talking about Tony to the girls, so he knows I’ve been through some shit.”

Daniela reaches across the table and grabs my hand. “Look, I just don’t want to see you get hurt. I’m not saying he’s a bad guy or anything. I just don’t know him or anything, so I’m being the friend who’s going to be logical as all hell.”

I squeeze her hand back, a lump forming in my throat. “I know, but I’m going to be careful this time. I need to try this, Daniela, to try and see if it’s even possible for me to trust or give my heart to someone again.”

She nods, her expression softening. “I completely understand, but don’t give your heart to him too quickly. I hope he’s the kind of man who deserves your love and attention, I really do.”

I lick my lips and take another sip of my drink before I say anything to her, “I’ve been getting some calls from unknown numbers again.”

Daniela sighs heavily and closes her eyes. “How does Tony keep finding you?”
