This is what I’m not used to—men who actively want to help me and expect nothing in return.

As a Nomad, I was forced to make deals with bikers on the road.

I never got help for free. There was always a price, even if it wasn’t discussed at the time.

At least here, I know I have men who will stand behind me.

I’m no longer a lone wolf, I have an entire pack of ruthless men and women behind me.

Astra

I’m cooped up in the clubhouse like a pretty bird in a gilded cage.

Rosa, Ruby, and Oakleigh are doing their best to make the day bearable, even though all I want is to walk the streets of Chihuahua.

I can imagine all the things we could be doing—going to the shops, getting some food, going to see some theater.

Instead, we’re all stuck inside.

The smell of acetone fills the air as Ruby went to work, buffing my nails with a vigor that felt more like punishment than pampering.

I watch her tattooed hands moving in rhythm with the bass thumping through the new speakers Doom just grabbed last night.

I can’t help but adore the beauty of Ruby’s tattoos—butterflies on a variety of flowers along her hands and wrists.

It’s feminine, yet so artistic.

Rosa’s cleaning her shotgun, her meticulousness eerie against the low-key girl’s day we’re trying to have while stuck in the clubhouse.

She doesn’t look up once, her focus solely on the task at hand.

The metallic clicks echo around the room and dance down my spine.

The gun is polished perfectly until it gleams so bright that it looks brand new.

Licking my lips, I ask her a million dollar question. “Is that new, or is it something you had in Montana?”

Rosa chuckles and cocks her head to the side, “What do you think?”

I shrug, careful not to do too much since Ruby’s working on my nails. “I have no idea.”

Rosa takes her rag down the shaft of her gun one last time. “I had all of mine and Axel’s guns brought over the border.”

Furrowing my brows, I wonder how they were able to do that.

Rosa places her gun down and continues speaking, “The more you’re with the club, the more you’ll understand we don’t follow the legalities of the local law. The club, we deal in some illegal shit, Astra, and you should know that now.”

Ruby cuts Rosa off. “It doesn’t mean we or our men are bad people. We do what needs to be done to keep food on the table and all of us protected.”

Nodding, I understand.

I wish I had people like them in my life when Tony unleashed his wrath on me.

Maybe if I had, I wouldn’t have been hurt like this. “I won’t judge any of you. Not in the least bit,” Licking my lips, I choose my words carefully. “A couple years back, I learned quickly how the world wasn’t so black and white. There isn’t just good and bad. There’s a spot in the middle for people like us.”

Oakleigh smiles as she makes us some sandwiches at the island. “If that isn’t the damn truth I don’t know what is.”
