It’s the whole reason I became a nomad in the first place.

When I lost my family, I lost everything.

“Well, I appreciate that.” I shake my head in disbelief. “I never thought anyone would go to so much effort. You’re a good fit for Razor, you know.”

Oakleigh smiles brightly. “I’d like to think I am and don’t take it personally. With all this cartel bullshit flying around, I like to know who the people closest to us really are.”

I don’t see how my parents’ past has anything to do with who I am as a person, but I respect her point.

“I appreciate the sentiment. When would you like to get going?” I don’t like talking about my family very much, so the only thing I want to do is get going.

“We could go now if that’s okay with you.”

Oakleigh nods. “Yeah, are we getting on your bike or in my SUV?”

It doesn’t take me more than a second before I respond. “It would probably be best to take your SUV. No taken woman should be on the back of another brother’s bike unless it’s an extreme emergency. I wouldn’t call a trip to the cat café an emergency.”

Oakleigh laughs loudly, her dreads flowing as she throws her head back in laughter. “Okay, well, I might say it’s an emergency. I see your point, though.”

Oakleigh and I walk out through the front of the clubhouse over to her SUV.

She unlocks it, gets in the driver’s seat, and I take the seat beside her.

I click on the button for the gate to open, and soon enough, she’s driving out onto the street.

As we drive through Chihuahua and get deeper into the city center, I see how hustling and bustling the city really is.

When I was a child, I had an opportunity to come to her home state of Sinaloa.

She grew up in a town called Nuevo Mundo, a small town nestled in the country.

Chihuahua is much more populated. Not one person is from the same place. We all come from different cities and backgrounds.

My mother would have loved how diverse the city is.

In times like these, I think about her more often than not, wondering what she would think about my life.

She continues driving until we’re pulling up to a small two-story building with a colorful sign on the front that reads ‘Catsandjava’.

I’m a little surprised it’s in English.

Then again, why am I surprised?

She pulls along the side of the building and parallel parks.

We get out of her SUV, and she throws her purse over her shoulder.

“We’re not spendin’ forever in here, right?” I really just want to get in and get out.

Oakleigh licks her lips and shakes her head. “No, I just need to meet Astra and talk about a few things, and then we can see where things are going.”

I nod, and the two of us head inside.

A bell rings on the door as soon as we enter, and while I don’t see any people here, there are plenty of cats lounging around.

The scent of fresh coffee wafts through the air, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t overwhelmed by the sheer amount of cat-themed shit crammed in here.

Everywhere I look, there’s another furry little beast sprawled out on furry cat trees, curled in colorful bean bags, and even in woven tunnels that hang from the ceiling.
