God dammit.
I didn’t realize she’d walked right out of the cafe, doing exactly what I told her not to do.
I don’t know what the hell to say to her right now. “Fuck, Astra . . .”
“I can’t keep living like this, Manuel," she says, her voice breaking. “With him always watching me, hurting me. It’s too much.”
Her words hit me like a punch to the gut.
Licking my lips, I make it all crystal clear.
“Listen to me,” I say firmly, locking eyes with her. “You won’t have to live like this anymore. We're gonna take care of you, Astra. I’ll always protect you, I promise.”
Astra stares at me for a moment, searching my face for any hint of deceit.
When she finds none, she nods slowly, her shoulders sagging with relief.
I extend my hand to her, she reaches out and grasps it tightly, as though it’s a lifeline being offered in the darkest of storms.
Together, we’ll navigate whatever comes our way, and I know we’ll come out on the positive end of it.
I doubt this woman realizes it, but she’s my life.
