Page 42 of Caught Looking

I’d rather celebrate with a short blonde. I saw her in the stands. It was hard knowing she was there, and I couldn’t look at her. The few glances I stole weren’t enough.

A white Hyundai Kona pulls up along the curb and honks, drawing Carter’s and my attention. I recognize the driver right away. She’s alone.

“Get back in your truck and follow me.”

Carter’s eyes grow wide. “Who the hell is that?”

I smirk. “We’re right behind you.”

“We are?”

I slap my new buddy on the back. “When a gorgeous woman tells you to do something, you comply.”

We get back into Carter’s truck.

“I sure hope the hell you know her.”

“She’s Nicole, Cassie’s cousin.”

“Cassie? As in rule number one, keep-your-hands-off-my-daughter Cassie?”

“The very one.”

Carter pulls behind Nicole, and we take off down the road.

“This is a bad idea, bro.”

“It’s a great idea.”

“Pleasetell me you don’t have a thing for the coach’s daughter.”

I contemplate telling him how we met back in my hometown, but I don’t. That information needs to stay private. The fewer people who know about it, the less chance Cassie will be in trouble with her dad. But how do I answer this question? I don’t want to lie because I have a very big thing for her. And that shared kiss only proved it never went away. She tasted divine.

Carter groans. At first, I think I spoke about how she tasted out loud, but then he shakes his head.

“You do, don’t you?”

“You can’t let anyone know.”

“You’re playing with fire. Why chance it?”

“It’s a long story.”

“I’ve seen you around campus. You’re not short on girls.”

I wince. It shouldn’t matter what I did in the past, nor should it matter what she’s done. We weren’t with each other, but damn if I don’t regret my choices after not finding her. I honestly thought I’d never see her again. And I sure as shit hate the thought of her douchebag ex’s hands touching her.

“Whatever you do, don’t mention the other girls.”

“Come on, I’m a better wingman than that. All I’m saying is to watch it. He’ll send your ass packing if you get caught.”

“We won’t get caught,” I say reassuringly but recognize the risk. It doesn’t matter. I can’t stay away from this girl.

“Whatever, man. They better have food.”

He’s quiet after that. We follow Nicole into the next town over. She pulls into a park, and there sits Cassie, waiting on a bench. Her face beams when she sees me.

Carter notices and gives me a side-eye glance. He doesn’t say anything but shakes his head knowingly. Yeah, I’m not following any rules when it comes to her.
