Of all the questions to ask, why does everyone pose that one?Of courseshe’s worth it.She’s more than worth it. The truth is, it’s me who doesn’t measure up. I know she is too good for me. But I also know I am too damn selfish to let her go. Cassie is the sweetest, most caring person I know, and she’s mine. When we’re back at her house, I plan to make my intentions known. It’s the first step to gaining Coach’s approval. He demands honesty. Well, I’ll be nothing but truthful. Honest fucking Abe here. I don’t want to spend the rest of the summer sneaking around that man’s back.

Cassie comes back out, carrying a tray filled with sliced desserts individually wrapped on single-serving plates. She unloads each dessert onto the table. When she is down to the last one, her eyes find mine. One corner of her mouth tips upward as suggestion swirls in her stare. My dick stirs to life. Her mouth parts ever so slightly, and damn if she doesn’t run her tongue along her teeth. Damn temptress. She knows how much I like that tongue of hers. The way my dick wakes up, he remembers fully too. Her smirk grows bigger as she turns and trots down the hallway.

“Okay, you better tell the man something because if he sees that eye-fucking you two gave each other, he’ll figure it out in no time.”

His words barely register as I take off after her.

“Where are you going?”

“I’ll be right back.”

“Don’t do it, man. You’re playing with fire.”

But I don’t listen. I only have one thing in mind as I slip down the hallway. It has nothing to do with Coach or Bobby’s party and everything to do with a certain temptress disguised as an angel.

The hall is long and narrow. The two doors to the right sport male and female signs, which I presume are bathrooms. I slink inside the one marked for males. It’s a single-occupancy bathroom, thank God. I don’t know what I would’ve done had someone else been in here. It’s bad enough I’m hanging by the door and waiting for my girl like a creeper. I don’t need witnesses.

Cassie emerges from the kitchen carrying a bag of rolls. I find myself once again thanking God for small favors. My plan would never have worked if she was carrying another large tray of desserts. When she nears where I stand hidden behind the door, I grab her by the arm and whirl her into me.

She lets out a small yelp before it registers who I am. “Dalton, we can’t be in here.” Her arms wrap around my neck as she presses her body against mine. My hands run along her curves until resting on her hips. This girl feels so damn good in my hands.

“Your mouth says no, but your body is saying something completely different.”

“My body is a traitor.”

“Your body knows exactly what it wants,” I practically growl and draw her into a kiss. She hesitates momentarily before her body melts against me. My entire world rights itself as we steal this moment together. Her mouth on mine and her fingers weaving through my hair are all innocent. I have no intention of taking this further. Just one stolen kiss to get through this god-awful party is all I need. Carter is right. I am playing with fire. I’ll end up burned, but with her beside me—those tender lips on my mouth—I’m ready to walk across fiery coals.

I force myself to break away before the congregation decides to immolate me. “You better get back out there.”

“Meet me in the garage when we get back home.”

I study her blue eyes that plead for more and nod. This seems to satisfy her. I don’t mention how I’m talking to her dad afterward. The less she stresses about today, the better. “I’ll be there.”

She smooths her hair down and flashes me a bright smile. With a glance down the hall, she slinks out of the room with confidence in her stride that was absent before. I wait a few minutes before exiting.

As I make my way over to where Carter still stands, I catch Bobby watching me. I tip my chin to him. His eyes narrow, and his gaze lingers a beat more before directing his attention toward Cassie. He works his jaw as if he’s trying to figure something out. He can prove nothing. I’m allowed to use the bathroom.

Carter and I sit through the dinner without any issues and listen to Mr. Sainthood himself thank everyone. He mainly talks about his efforts of spreading the Word and how he can’t wait until next year when he can be there for longer periods of time. He seeks out Cassie and motions for her to join him. While she walks to him, he glances at her dad with a knowing smirk. Her dad nods.

Uh-oh.A funny feeling settles in my stomach. I don’t like this at all.

Cassie forces her fake smile and stands beside him. I don’t understand how no one can see how devoid of emotion she is when she’s around this douchebag. It’s so obvious.

“I wanted to make an official announcement,” Preppy Boy says.

My hands clench as he grabs hold of her hand, and she doesn’t pull away.Pull away, damn it.

“As you all know, I’ve known Cassie practically my entire life. We grew up together and have remained friends.”

“Uh-oh,” Carter mimics my sentiment.

“And then we started courting a couple of years ago.”

Courting? What is this, the sixteenth century? Who uses that term these days? What guy would? He really is a douche.

Bobby looks down at Cassie as collective “ahs” ring through the room. I want to barf.

“Since we’ll be graduating at the end of this school year, it’s finally time to announce that Cassie has accepted my marriage proposal.” He whips out a ring. Cassie’s fake smile flattens to a look of astonishment.
