“Who knew taking out a floor lamp would be grounds for getting hit on? Poor guy.” The morning rush from the rummage sale has passed, and Dalton’s muscle has been a tremendous help. Well, he and a couple of guys from the team he recruited to help. I contribute a lot of today’s success to Dalton. Without his help, I wouldn’t have gotten people checked out as fast. The other guys left to prepare for tonight’s game, but Dalton stayed behind, waiting for his college friend to arrive.

“I’m not going to lie. Lover Boy does look rather sexy.”

My gaze peruses Dalton’s body as he enters the annex through the glass door. It isn’t the clothes themselves that make him sexy. It’s how he carries himself. He’s relaxed and exudes confidence. Sure, it doesn’t hurt that the heather gray T-shirt fits snug across his broad shoulders and biceps. Every time he lifts something, I want to run my hands along his corded muscles, knowing how they work to please me. Nor does it hurt that those ripped jeans I love are slung so low that I want to push them farther down and devour what I know they hide. Warmth floods my cheeks when my gaze meets his. Thinking dirty thoughts of what I can do to him while doing God’s work goes against everything I’m taught. No wonder lust is a deadly sin. But that doesn’t negate how my body buzzes with a need he can more than fill. That desire bubbling inside couldn’t care less where we’re at. It just wants him to satisfy it.

“Looks like Lover Boy is coming over.”

“Mm-hmm,” is all I manage to say.

“Girl, you have it bad. You better not be in the same room with him when your daddy’s around. There is no hiding that lustful look you’ve got going on.”

“You’re insane.” I bite my lip and straighten the scant pile of clothes scattered across the table. I need to keep my hands busy. Otherwise, I’d fidget, and Nicole would make fun of me even more.

“I don’t think so.”

“There isn’t a special look.” But as the words leave my mouth, my eyes betray me as they continue to watch Dalton’s approach. I get lost in his features. He’s so handsome. But then, he notices me staring and smiles. All of that physical appearance disappears, and I’m left seeing the little boy who just wants to be loved. But I also see the man who turns me into the best version of myself. I love that he demands that I stand up for myself. No other man in my life has ever done that.

“Where do you need me next, boss?” There’s a slight tease to his tone.

“Ms. Willow finally release you?” My lips twitch.

“She hinted for me to go home with her, but I politely refused. Although, I’m sure she could use some help getting the lamp inside the house. The lamp’s taller than her.”

“She wanted help, all right,” Nicole says. “But it wasn’t for the lamp.”

I choke on a laugh. “Nicole!”

Dalton’s grin widens.

“What? He’s probably the only reason she showed up today.”

“She might’ve mentioned something along those lines.” Dalton stands taller and puffs out his chest.

“Who would’ve thought a seventy-five-year-old would be my competitor.” My eyes bulge at my admission. I glance around to see if anyone heard while Nicole laughs.

Dalton leans down to grab a rogue sweater from the table. The movement places his mouth by my ear. “When it comes to you, there’snocompetition.”

Chills chase down my spine.

“Nice save, Lover Boy.” Nicole pats his arm as she walks by. “I’m going to get the boxes from the car. We don’t have too much to pack up.” She turns to me out of his view and wiggles her eyebrows. “Have fun.”

“You were right. This was a madhouse.” Dalton straightens to full height and looks around the annex.

“The community’s very supportive. But thanks to social media, our reach extends a few hundred miles. As you can tell, we sold most of what we had, including the furniture. We should surpass our goal.”

“I’m impressed, Miss Greenburg.” He steps into my space, closing the gap between us. My heart rate kicks up a notch. I should back away. If anyone saw us, what would they think? But instead of creating the much-needed distance, I stay stagnant as his stare holds me captive.

“The summer will be smoother from now on. There won’t be so many distractions.”

“I can think of a few distractions.”

My cheeks flame again. “Hmm, maybe working together is a bad idea.”

“Why’s that, Choir Girl?”

“I’m not doing a good job hiding what you do to me.”Or what I want you to do to me.

His breath hitches. “What am I doing to you?”
