I sigh. “It’s just, Mom used to tend to the landscaping. The bushes and flowers always looked pristine. Now, it’s . . . different.”

“Hey.” He pulls me into a hug, and I let him. I’m so confused. How can he not care about family, but yet show me so much affection? Doesn’t he realize that I would become his family if things progressed between us? I’m jumping ahead of myself and overthinking. Dalton is good underneath. I know this. I’m giving Bobby’s words too much real estate in my mind.

“Hey, look at me.”

I tip my head back far enough to meet his eyes.He tucks a curl behind my ear. The brush of his fingers grazing my skin sends chills down my spine.

“Life changes, but what matters is what is in your heart. That’s where the memories are kept.”

And he always says the sweetest things.

“Can you sneak into my bedroom tonight?” I blurt out. I’m not asking for sexual reasons, not really. I mainly want him to hold me. I want to wake up in his arms.

He hesitates. “I should talk to your dad first. We’ve been lucky so far, but—‍”

“We can talk to him tomorrow,” I interrupt. “Please? I just want you to hold me.”

His eyes hood over, and he squeezes a little tighter. “You know I can’t resist you.”

He’s about to kiss me when the door handle jiggles. We quickly break apart before Dad enters. It’s going to be a long evening. But Dalton’s right. We need to talk to Dad. I can’t stand hiding what I feel about him. It’s not fair to either of us. Dad isn’t going to be happy, and I have no idea what he’ll do. That’s why I want to wait until tomorrow. I want one last night of him holding me before my dad tells me to stay the rest of the summer with Nicole. Dad isn’t going to be happy, but he won’t stop me.

Chapter Thirty-Six

DALTON

This is crazy. My heart pounds as I wait for the slide of the patio doors. Coach will take Bellow out, which creates the perfect opportunity to sneak into Cassie’s room. Once the door slides shut, I dash into her bedroom. I close the door behind me and fidget with the handle, trying to find the lock.

“There’s no lock.” Cassie’s voice says through the darkness. That can’t be good.

“You’re positive he won’t come in here?” I step toward her. I know sex is on her mind, despite what she said, but my only reason for being here is to hold her. I promised myself I wouldn’t touch her. I was serious about wanting to talk to Coach before doing anything else. The guilt is tearing me up. When we came back from the pizza joint, he seemed the most relaxed I’d ever seen him. He also never left our side all evening, so I exited to my room early. But he’s finally treating me like a normal human being. I don’t want to jeopardize that until our talk.

“Quit worrying. He never comes in here. The missing lock is a safety feature in case of a fire.” The night light cast a soft glow over Cassie’s silhouette. Her hair shines. She stares up at me with dark and sultry blue eyes. My dick comes to life. My promise is only hours old, and it’s already in jeopardy.

I move to her bed and pull back the covers. I hold back a groan when I discover she’s naked. All my blood runs south.Shit. This isn’t good.

“Just to hold you, huh?”

She blushes. “I changed my mind.”

“I just don’t want to get caught. Not until we talk to your dad.” I slide in beside her.

“We’ll talk to him tomorrow, I promise.” She sidles up against me. “But no one said we have to be saints until then.”

“Cassie, I—” I stop speaking when she grinds against me. My dick hardens to full mast, pressing against my shorts. I can’t help but tug her closer. My hands run along her silky skin. It’s a good thing I didn’t bring a condom. There’s no way I’d restrain.

“Shh. No more talking.” Her lips press against mine, and my will snaps. Kissing isn’t bad. I can handle kissing. I can even satisfy her if that’s what my girl wants.

The kiss starts out slow and sensual. I explore her body with my palms, perusing every inch, every single curve.

“I want you.” She goes to lower my shorts, but I stop her.

“I don’t have a condom.” This causes her to pause.

“You didn’t bring one?”

“No.” What I thought was an ingenious idea turned into the worst decision since the Cubs traded Javier Baez. I mean seriously, who gets rid of their team’s spark plug?

“Hmm, it’s a good thing I have some.”
