And I mean that. We have a plan. She’ll work as a nurse while I take my shot. If I don’t get called up within the next few years, then I’ll work on becoming a mechanic. I’m fairly certain I’ll be called up shortly.

“You’d be a fool not to take that shot. You’re one heck of a player. But you’ll make an even better husband.” With our hands still clasped, he pulls me into a hug and then pats my back. “Now, let’s prove me right, shall we?”

I smile and nod. “I’m ready.”

A few minutes later, I stand near the altar as Cassie’s father walks her down the aisle. I have to catch my breath. My hand goes to my chest. My girl stands there dressed in an all-white boho gown. Beaded spaghetti straps and lace motifs over tulle overlay complete the look. Her hair is pulled into an updo, exposing her tanned neck that calls to me.Damn.

I’m totally captivated during the entire ceremony. And when we get to the rings, I’m floored.

Nicole hands Cassie the ring. When she holds it up, my breath is knocked away for the second time. Gramps’s ring, the one I sold to come back to California, lays in her palm.

“Is that—”

“Your grandfather’s ring.” She beams up at me.

“How?”

“I called Marty after you told me what you had done and wired him the money. I had him go back to the pawnshop and buy it back. I’m so glad he went with you that day.”

“I can’t believe you did this.” My voice is barely above a whisper. I’m blown away. This is the nicest gift anyone has given me. That includes the ’57 Chevy Cassie’s dad gave us for our wedding present.

“This ring meant a lot to you. I couldn’t bear to see you give it up.”

“I’d give up anything for the chance to be with you but thank you.” I pull her in for a hug, paying particular attention to her hair and makeup. Her cucumber-melon scent wafts in the air between us. Before we get too far into the hug, a stern throat clearing breaks us apart. A rumble of laughter follows suit.

Biting back smiles, we get into position as her dad continues. When he finally announces us husband and wife and I kiss my bride, relief like I’ve never known settles through me. Our world is just beginning and there are a lot of unknowns, but I’m right where I belong. We break apart, hands still clasped together. Resting my forehead on hers, my throat clogs with emotion as I say, “I love you so much.”

“I’m so happy to be called Mrs. Boyd. I can’t wait for our life to begin.”

I smile. There was a time when I wanted to escape my last name, but that was before a new chapter started. I lean further down and whisper in her ear, “I can’t wait until after when we’re alone.”

She practically moans, but I don’t miss the slight blush creeping across her cheeks. My grin widens at my not-so-innocent girl. The music starts playing.

“Let’s get to it then,” she says.

“Yes, ma’am.” I squeeze her hand as we turn to face the audience. With my best friend by my side and the friends that have been more like family to me seated nearby, I stand in awe. Then I escort my wife down the aisle.

When we make it to the end, Cassie’s gaze lands on mine. I know at that moment, I’m the luckiest man in the room.

No regrets, no remorse.
