“A lawyer? You think you have what it takes to be a cutthroat lawyer?”

“Of course.” His cocky demeanor shines through.

“Hmm, maybe corporate law. I can picture you taking charge in the boardroom.”

He pulls me back close to him again. “I’d rather take charge in the bedroom. What’d ya say?”

Tempting, so goddamn tempting, but my grandmother’s house is certainly not the place.

“I know you would. But it will have to wait until we return to Los Angeles.”

He jerks his head back. “What do you mean?”

“I missed you like fucking crazy, too, so I did something,” I say, hardly containing my smile. “I talked with Dr. Steinberg. I originally called to ask if he’d be opening his team up for undergrads next year, but after explaining my situation, he opened a spot starting now.”

“He did?”

I shake my head.

“You’re actually staying at Cessna U?”

“Yes!” I yelp as he picks me up and spins with me in his arms.

“I can’t believe this,” he says, putting me back down. He tilts his head and grins. “And here I was looking to be your Prince and swoop in to save you. But you saved yourself.”

I laugh. “I wouldn’t be a badass Queen if I let you do that.”

“Fuck, I’ve missed you.”

He doesn’t give me time to respond as his lips meet mine in a tender, passionate kiss. It’s the kind that speaks volumes with no need for words. In that moment, all the uncertainty and fears melt away, leaving only the two of us and the promise of a future together.

Blake cups my face in his hands as we break apart, his gaze unwavering. “I love you, Amanda Hoyt. And I will spend every day proving it to you.”

“I’m holding you to that.”

I lean in for another kiss, savoring the taste of his lips against mine. And when we pull back and stay wrapped in each other’s arms, I realize that sometimes, the most unexpected twists of fate can lead us exactly where we need to be. And for me, that place is right here, in Blake’s embrace, with a future full of endless possibilities stretching out before us.

With Blake free to sign with the Maine Pine Skaters after graduation, we could make a life together here. The image of our future flashes in my mind, and it’s everything I’ve ever wanted.

CHAPTERFORTY-THREE

BLAKE

The DJ drops a popular beat, and I inwardly groan. My girl won’t be returning to my side anytime soon. Not that watching her move those hips is a hardship or anything, but I just want her next to me. Still, I can’t complain. She and Maddy are having fun dancing together.

It is New Year’s Eve, and we’re partying in a luxurious ballroom at a swanky hotel courtesy of Jimbo’s father’s company. J-Man invited his fraternity brothers along with the hockey team. Do I really want to be here? Absolutely not. My ideal way to welcome the new year would be to spend it alone with my girl. Naked. But since my roommates and Country were going, I had little say in the matter.

“Hello, gentlemen.” J-Man approaches our table with two girls flanking his side. The one licks her lips, eyeing Drew. I had wondered when the other girls would show up. Much to the guy’s disappointment, it’s been a sausage fest so far.

“What’s going on with you all? With our strong start, I hoped to see our name highlighted at the Frozen Four. You guys look good, but those away games … oof, they’re killers,” he continues, his voice teasing.

Amanda’s laughter breaks through the music, and like a drug I crave, it draws my attention back to the dance floor and away from his backhanded compliment. Her brown hair is pulled up high, and her green eyes sparkle as she laughs at whatever Maddy tells her. Her body sways to the bass-thumping music, her hips moving rhythmically against Maddy’s. But her smile beckons me and tempts me to abandon my current conversation with my teammates.

Things have been good since we returned from Boston. After spending Christmas with her grandmother, we flew back and camped at her apartment. It’s been fun living in our little bubble, and I find myself not wanting to break free.

A certain kind of peace comes with having Amanda back in my life. It’s almost surreal, you know? We’ve had late-night taco runs, binge-watched more Netflix shows than I can count, and engaged in satisfying hot sessions between the sheets—which, for the record, she’s fucking fantastic at. But the best part is just being with her. Her sharp wit, her drive, and her ability to see the good in me have me falling for her all over again.

“Yeah, but the Frozen Four won’t mean shit if we can’t make it there.”
