Saff was still completely frozen, processing what had just happened when—

“Saff?”

She heard a woman’s voice call out for her. Not just a woman’s voice.

Erin’s voice.

“Saff?” she called again, and Saff could hear her footsteps against the wood floor. Footsteps getting closer.

She shot up, swinging her legs off the bed. “Uh—“ she cleared her throat. “Yeah,” she called back, standing. “Yeah—in here.”

By the time she’d taken one step toward the door, Erin had already made it to the doorway.

She looked at her, then to the bed where Maddie was laying, then back at her.

Saff cleared her throat. “The dust in the basement was—“

“Sylvia asked me to come get you,” Erin said, clearly either ignoring the situation she’d walked in on, or unable to see it.

“For what—“

“It’s Sarah,” Erin continued, and Saff could see concern flash across her face. “Her water broke.”

Chapter twenty-four

Maddie anxiously tapped her fingers against the handle of her coffee mug.

It had taken just about every ounce of willpower she had to keep from immediately making Josh take her to the medical building early that morning. Or if she was being honest, she’d really wanted him to take her in the middle of the night, but she knew that was too much.

Instead, she’d laid awake in bed for hours, tossing and turning as the kiss with Saff ran through her mind on an endless loop.

The warmth of her lips.

The way she ran her hand up her back and pulled her closer.

The sudden urgency in her movements after she wrapped her leg around her.

A small smirk formed on her lips as the memories of her touch ran through her mind for what was probably the thousandth time that morning.

She quickly wiped the look away, evening out her expression before taking another sip of her coffee.

Her third coffee that morning.

For one, she definitely needed the energy after barely sleeping the night before. But she was also trying to pass the time. Although she was dying to see Saff, and of course make sure Sarah was okay. She also knew it probably wouldn’t be appropriate for her to show up during the birth.

So instead, she’d chosen to spend her morning sipping coffee and reminiscing about her night.

Herincrediblenight.

Another smirk passed over her lips, and this time she let it stay for a few seconds.

“Hey honey,” her mother’s voice came calling over her shoulder. “I’m just about done here.”

“Okay,” Maddie replied, taking another sip of her coffee.

An excitement burned through her stomach at the possibility of seeing Saff soon. She didn’t know much about labor times, but it had definitely been a while by that point. So hopefully things were going well and almost over, at least for Sarah’s sake.

A minute later, she heard her mother’s voice again approaching her.
