Two men stood around him, and a third was bent over, a knee pressed against his chest.

Saff coughed, the metallic taste still strong in her mouth.

She lifted one hand to the back of her neck and felt a slick wetness against her fingertips.

She closed her eyes for a moment, letting her vision adjust and return to normal.

When she finally opened her eyes again, she immediately saw Sylvia standing a few feet in front of her.

The look on her face was a mixture of anger, disappointment, and maybe a small hint of pity.

Her eyes flicked from Saff’s face down to her hand. And when Saff followed her gaze, she realized what she was staring at.

Right there in her hand, still clutched tightly like her life depended on it, was the knife. The knife she’d hidden from them. The knife she wasn’t supposed to have.

She looked back up at Sylvia, and their gazes met again.

This time, there was much more disappointment and resignation than there was anger.

Sylvia nodded to the young man standing beside her. “Put her back in lockup.”

Chapter twenty-six

Maddie grinned as they continued walking in silence to the medical building. She’d been replaying the memories in her head, letting the world around her fall away, when suddenly her mother stopped beside her.

Maddie’s hand tightened around her arm.

And right as she opened her mouth to ask what was wrong, her senses returned and she could hear it.

The light murmur of voices in front of them. And mixed in with them, someone crying. Or maybe multiple people crying.

“Mom—“

“Nadia,” her mother said, her voice filled with a level of concern that set her entire body on edge. “What happened?”

She could hear a light sniffling slowly come closer. And after a few moments, the answer finally came through a fresh sob.

“S—Sarah. They didn’t make it.”

A sudden sick weight heaved into her stomach.

“Oh, my—” The words came out quiet and broken from her mother’s mouth. But whatever she said next, Maddie didn’t hear.

In less than a second, her brain had already switched to Saff. She couldn’t imagine what she must be feeling.

“Where’s Saff?” Maddie asked, trying her best to keep the worry from her voice.

Nadia sniffled once more in front of her, but then went quiet.

Maddie waited for an answer, and for some reason the silence sent a sick feeling traveling down her throat and into her stomach.

She swallowed.

“Where is Saff?”

Chapter twenty-seven

It looked like a gun.
