“Go ahead,” I tell Mr. Morgan. “Take care of it, just like she said.”

Mr. Morgan looks between us for a moment before shaking his head and shrugging.

The girl flounces over to the hard plastic seats of the lobby and sits down.

“What are you doing?” I ask.

“Waiting for my car to be repaired,” she answers, grabbing a magazine.

“Nah, you’re coming with me,” I tell her. “Come on.”

She stares at me, green eyes widening. “What?”

“I’ve got stuff to do and I need to keep an eye on you. Let’s go.”

“No.”

“You want to do this the easy way or the hard way?” I ask, stepping closer to her. A thrill shoots down my spine as I see the fear in her eyes. I’m over a foot taller than her and could easily lift her over my shoulder if I wanted, even with her plus-size frame.

Sienna doesn’t answer, instead standing up and following me as we walk out of the garage. “Good girl,” I say over my shoulder.

She lets out a little squeak and I smirk to myself.

We approach my bike and she stares at it. “How are we both going to fit?” she asks, uncertainty in her tone. “I’m not exactly lithe, and you’re … very broad,” she says, waving her hands at me.

“We’ll fit,” I tell her, thrusting a helmet towards her. She takes it and starts buckling it on while I climb onto the bike.

Once I’m seated, I wait for Sienna to throw her leg over the back before revving the engine. She shrieks and clings to me, making me grin wider under my helmet.

“Hold on Princess,” I call out, wrapping her arms around my waist more securely. We take off and I drive us through town to the local hardware store.

Once we arrive, Sienna seems in a hurry to get off the bike, shoving the helmet on the seat before tagging along behind me as I walk into the hardware store.

“Hey Joe,” I call. “Need to pick up that part I ordered.”

Joe nods at me and his eyes slide over to Sienna, who is looking around the shop with curious eyes.

“That the girl you said not to help?” he asks.

Sienna makes a face at that and I grin. “Yep. She’s hanging out with me today. She can’t be a nuisance if she’s being supervised.”

“Come on,” she whines. “I’m just trying to do my job!”

“Your job is to scrutinize our town like it’s a bug under a microscope,” I say, reaching for the plumbing part that Joe ordered for me. “And we don’t need that.”

Joe pauses when he starts ringing me up, “By the way, one of the Serpents was lurking around last night. I chased him off but he threatened to come back with some friends.”

“I’ll look into it,” I promise him.

“We ran that Serpent slime out of town two decades ago,” Joe complains. “What are they doing back?”

“That’s what I want to know,” I say, taking the bag from his offered hand. “The Blades will find out, don’t worry.”

I exchange a nod with him, a silent acknowledgment that the Blades always protect what’s ours.

Sienna follows me out as I leave and I tuck the bag into the back of the bike before getting back on. She taps me on the arm and I turn so I can hear her.

“What are the Serpents?”
