I wonder if Bastian even knows how bruised up she is. He can be a bastard sometimes, but I don’t doubt he’s kicking himself right now for how much he hurt her. If he wasn’t a good person, I wouldn’t follow him around like I do. He’s always had our backs, being the one to make the tough decisions, even when we were young.

And he’s good about owning up to his mistakes. I know he’ll come back and apologize, once he’s cleared his head.

“Is Dominic okay?” Sienna asks. “He looked like he was about to yell.”

“He’s fine,” I tell her. “He’s more pissed at Bastian than anything. Dom is the oldest, so sometimes he starts feeling like he should be better at taking care of things.”

Sienna frowns. “He’s a lot better at that sort of thing than he thinks.”

I nod. “Dom's tough on himself. We all can be,” I remark, finishing up.

“We can be our own worst critics,” Sienna agrees. I help her stand and check her once more, trying to make sure I didn’t miss anything.

“How do you feel now?”

“Still shitty, but better,” she admits.

“Good. Are you still wanting to go out canvassing tomorrow?”

She shakes her head. “I have to turn in some work. I need to go to the campus and see Dr. Thornton.”

I can’t help the frown that etches itself on my face at that.

“What? Why do you hate him so much?”

“We go way back,” I mutter. “So just trust me, you don't want to be alone with him.”

“How do you know him?” Sienna asks, tilting her head as she studies me. I step back instinctively.

“We knew him a long time ago,” I mutter. “It doesn’t matter. You’re not allowed to be around him without one of us going with you.”

“If you won’t tell me, I'll just assume you're biased against him,” Sienna retorts, her eyes narrowing.

“It's complicated. Trust me on this one,” I say, a hint of tension in my voice.

“You guys haven’t given me much reason to trust you yet,” Sienna says, narrowing her eyes. “You keep asking me to trust you, but you won’t extend that courtesy to me.”

“Come on, you know it's not that simple. Trust goes both ways,” I tell her, trying to ease the tension.

“Exactly,” Sienna says, eyes issuing a challenge.

I take a deep breath. “What do you want to do now?” I ask instead. “Do you want to go watch a movie or anything?”

“I want some space,” she says. “Can I at least have that?”

I look down at the floor for a moment. “Yeah. You can have space.”

“I’m going to my room,” she says, exiting the bathroom.

“You mean my room?”

Silence hangs in the air as she slips inside my room, shutting the door behind her and locking it with a soft click.

I scrub my face with my hands, wondering how everything got so … complicated all of a sudden.
