The days crawl by as I try to move past Sienna’s disappearance.

The place feels emptier without her presence. I miss the easy banter between us, the way she could lighten the mood with a clever quip or that sweet smile. But now the mood just feels suffocating.

I’m sitting in the living room now, staring at the blank TV screen, lost in thought when Dominic enters.

“Do you have info on the updated signage?” His voice startles me and I jump a little, glancing up at him.

“Sorry,” he adds. “Just wanted to check.”

“Oh yeah I’ve got an ETA for us that the new signage will be in by Thursday,” I tell him. I glance back at the TV, heaving a sigh.

“You have to get over it,” Dominic says, voice low. “She’s not coming back.”

“I know,” I turn, eyes narrowing as I snap at him. “Just miss the way things used to be, you know? Maybe we were trying to make up for all the shit with …”

“Don’t,” Dominic warns, eyes flashing.

“Whatever,” I say, pushing off the couch. “I’m just trying to get through the day.”

“Fine. I’m heading to the shop,” Dominic says, grabbing his keys from the hook. “I can’t take any more of your morose attitude.”

I flop back down onto the couch and glare at the blank screen as Dominic takes off. It’s not like I’m going through some kind of emo phase. I’m not lying on my bed listening to angsty music while wearing seventeen layers of eyeliner. It’s just been tough to lose someone I was starting to care about, that’s all.

Picking up a comic book off the coffee table, I begin to flick through with listless energy. The doorbell rings, bringing me out of my funk for a moment, curiosity catching hold.

Walking over to the door, I crack it open and spot Sienna standing there on the front porch, arms wrapped around herself.

“Sienna,” I say, my heart leaping into my throat. “What’s up?” I push the door open and step outside onto the porch with her. My eyes widen upon seeing her standing there.

“I need to talk to you,” she says softly. “All three of you.” Hope blooms inside my chest, along with a dose of apprehension.

“Oh, uh. Okay. They’re both at the shop right now. Can it wait until the end of the day, or do you need to talk to them now?”

Sienna chews her lip. “I guess it can wait.”

“Wait, it’s not like we’re busy today. I’ll call Dom and Bastian and have them come home right now. I feel like it’s something important, right?”

Sienna nods and I pick up the phone, dialing Bastian’s number.

“Hey,” he says, picking up right away.

“Sienna’s here,” I say, forgoing a greeting. “She wants to talk to us.”

“Shit.” Bastian drops something and it clatters, echoing. “Okay, be there in a few, just … don’t let her go anywhere.”

“Wouldn’t dream of it,” I tell him. “See you soon.”

He hangs up and I push the door open again. “You wanna come inside to wait?”

“Sure,” Sienna nods, following me inside with hesitant steps. “I don’t know why I’m here, but … I had to come.”

She sits down on the couch and I sit near her, not so close as to scare her away. “So how have you been?” I ask, trying to keep things light.

She gives me a tentative smile. “Good. Been busy working on stuff with the research project. We’re almost at phase two.”

“That’s good,” I respond, wondering what it is she might be here to talk about.

The front door squeaks open and we both jump, a little jittery.
